Mounting stud for side cover
« on: July 10, 2020, 10:27:23 AM »
I have no idea what's it called but does anyone know if the three studs on the side covers are some kind of standard stud that could be bought separately? They are a part of the plastic battery and air filter cover on my '82 CB650 and I want to make my own side covers but use the stock mounting brackets on the frame if possible.

Has anyone seen such a separate part, like a bolt with a similar cone shape at one end? Otherwise I'll figure something out, but it would make it easier if they already exist.

They can be seen in the corners of the side cover here:

I think I've heard of someone using a bolt to replace a broken stud, but maybe something like this would work better for your purpose.

I was hoping to find metal ones but that is absolutely best option so far. Thanks!

If you are using metal or carbon and don't mind the race bike look Dzus buttons could work. They are available in different head styles and sizes.

When I was making aluminum side covers that bolted on, I used 'Well Nuts' that fit through the stock grommet tabs and bolted my covers on with socket head cap screws.

I used one of those replacement plastic side cover studs and it worked well but you have to get the end in just the right position to work as original. I used modeling clay to see where it should end up and took pictures to use while cutting and JB welding it. It was fun for certain definitions of the word  ;) .

 Many thanks, everyone!

I'm sure these suggestions will help me solve the mounting. I'm trying to solve every change I do to the bike with as little cutting as possible.
