Sensors/Probes
« on: July 10, 2020, 05:25:29 PM »
So I occasionally go to these car/motorcycle cruises through the town I live in. Sometimes the line is really long and I'm sitting at idle or low speed for quite some time. I haven't had a clue what my head temp is so I constantly shut the bike off or I'll go through a run and park for an hour or two. How concerned should I be for overheating? For peace of mind, how would you go about installing a temp probe? I intend on installing an egt sensor as well, am I just wasting my time with that?

To sum it all up, what aftermarket sensors are you using, if any?

I've heard of cylinder head temp sensors from air cooled Volkswagens working pretty well.

Most people say it's not a big deal, and the bike will handle it fine. Many of these bikes have made it 40+ years without a problem, so clearly it's not a huge issue. However, I personally believe it's probably pretty easy for the cylinder head temperature to get extremely high in very low speed stop/go or excessive traffic. Which is probably why I see so many air cooled bikes that smoke a bit or have excessive valve-guide wear compared to liquid cooled motors.

Trailtech makes a trick little temperature gauge that comes with a temperature sensor mounted to a spark-plug washer. https://www.trailtech.net/tto-1 . Just order it with the correct sized spark-plug sensor, and you should be good to go.

I overheated my 91 750 Nighthawk once on a long ride home from work the Friday of a Labor Day weekend. I could feel the heat from the pegs through my boots and even stop and go performance was terrible. I got off the highway and found it some shade for an hour, it was fine after that.
