New owner of '73 CB750
« on: July 13, 2020, 12:55:56 PM »
I picked up a decently original '73 CB750 project.  All parts are accounted for except (of course) the exhaust, plus bars - he had ape hangers on it..... and the disc brake guard.  I know these bikes pretty well, having owned a really nice '76, and have restored many UJMs - KZ, GPz, GS, CB, so it'll be getting the full going through.

The seller said it ran after he rebuilt the carbs, but I'm doing them with ultrasonic/soda blast as I looked at his work and don't trust it.  First day I got it all stripped down and the head and barrels off.  For sure it has never been apart and it was super easy to disassemble, probably the easiest I've ever done.  A couple valve adjustments were way off and the cam chain tension wasn't set.  But everything I checked so far looks great, the journals/cam/rocker/bearing surfaces and bores/pistons are just fine.  All will be refreshed properly.

A friend is giving me a nice rear rim as he's going to a smaller diameter, and I'll get a new front, as they are both rusty.   The pipes are rusty and dinged originals, and it has really rusty Mac 4/2 slipons, so I need to hunt down something. I just missed a 'last one' 4/2 Mac setup for $330 on Denniskirk, should have pulled the trigger yesterday.

Not sure what the tank and covers color and vintage are, maybe Candy Antares red (?) but it looks like this is a bit more purple/maroon.  Looks to be original color on the covers, not a respray.  Tank also seems to be original (but some dents).  Anyway it'll end up orange I think, or possibly olive.

Oh I also uploaded a pic of my most recent restoration, a '82 GS1100E with a Mr Turbo kit, it's being jetted right now so I needed another project!  This one was taken apart new (I have the original 0 mil wheels and tires (!), exhaust, carbs, cams, air box, etc.   The bike only ever raced at Bonneville and El Mirage, and I have the records, plaques and pictures from the seller.  It did 185 MPH tops, which ain't bad at altitude and 120 degree heat.

It was the 80's, was parked in '96. Started right up a couple weeks ago, no smoke and no undue sounds/rattles. It was built by Vesco, I have all the receipts. Major internal work, 6.5:1 pistons, sleeved smaller than stock, welded crank, forged pistons, different cam, APE studs, Dyna S igniton/coils etc. Getting jetted now.  It (supposedly) was the fastest street registered motorcycle (documented) for years. Going that fast on the salt in those conditions must be hairy.

I love the big GSs as I'm very tall.  But my old '75 CB750 was one of the sweetest bikes I ever owned, so I am looking forward to having this '73 in the stable.

Here's a video of the GS startup if interested.
