HELP! 1996 POS Honda Shadow!! HELP!
« on: July 15, 2020, 07:35:09 PM »
I am trying to help out a buddy. He told me to just get a spark.....ug.
Resistance to the pulse generator is good.
New starter, new coils, fully charged battery...no spark.

Turns over strong, kill switch is clean and functioning...

I am losing my mind with this thing. I have the shop manual and YouTube as reference..but nothing is working. Need my SOHC brothers for assistance.  (I will not join a Honda Shadow forum)

Is the gap between the pulse generator adjustable and to spec ?
Are the ignitors working. Black #$%* oozing out doesn't affect operation.
Don't know the shadows system, just going off my 650 experience.

Does this one have the mysterious black box ignition controller?

Also, kill switch circuit and/or kickstand safety?

I checked resistance on the pulse generator and it is within spec. I tried using my ohmmeter for checking peak voltage but not sure how accurate it was. Not the right tool. Bike does have the "black box" CDI. I have the kickstand up and clutch lever pulled. Bike does have all sorts of safety switches.

I assume you don't have an extra CDI box lying around that you know is good?
If an electrolytic cap in the box is fried or one of the mosfets are toast it ain't gonna run no matter what you do.

Clutch perch switch could be bad, easy check with an ohm meter. That's all I've got.

Edit: fingers crossed for ya.

Will double check. Good point Alan. I have the clutch pulled, but never checked the switches operation...fingers crossed. (Cheap and simple)

That bike has a fuel pump. If you drain and reinstall the pump you should hear it priming. There's a filter too, maybe there's a no fuel, no spark enabled situation?

Your kill switch on the right handlebar, and kickstand switch work the same way, make sure they're switching, check your neutral switch too. If these light their dash lights I guess they're good.

Edit: looks like your ignition pulse generator(s) are under the RH side engine cover. You can probably rule these out after checking both with an ohm meter.https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/honda/motorcycle/1996/vt1100c-a-shadow-1100/ignition-pulse-generator

You said the battery is fully charged but what is it doing when you hit the start switch.  The absolute most irritating and time consuming repair I've ever done was due to the battery.  It showed full charge when we checked it but when we hit the start button the voltage dropped like a rock.  Almost to 6 volts.  The battery was faulty under a load.

New battery. Will check under load. Cranks strong.

This spring I had to replace a battery on my ZRX. Was new last year, on tender all winter, wouldn't even turn indicator lights on. Read 12V...but nada.

Clutch switch would only affect the electric starter, not spark/ignition.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Is it possible to heavily insure it and stage a tragic fire Franky? Most of my bikes are insured for way more than (I think) they're worth, and insurance companies can't determine a bike's condition when it's melted into the ground.......... ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

That is the worst part..not even my bike. Doing it for an old friend.  (Literally, old) he has had it for 3 years and only daydreamed of riding it. I promised to get it running. He will repay me for what I put into it but, am expecting a headache about that.

I think Duke may be onto something. The CDI boxes are notorious for having the electronic switches burn up and then it’s useless. If this is the case, you may be able to source the components and repair the existing unit. I know this is possible for the RC51. The replacement cost is about $500 but the unit can be repaired for about $20 worth of electronic components. You might be able to find a YouTube video on it or a forum post with instructions and part numbers. It may get your bike back on the road and save you that $300. Good luck.

No worries Franky, get it going if you can, but if you can't, purify it with fire. My insurance company doesn't need my bikes to be registered to insure them, I have "laid up insurance" on some of my projects, just  to cover what I have in them. ;D

If it was a 650 with cdi s and an old battery I would certainly think that the cdi were burned out by either somebody jump starting it with the family car or it just was unable to receive enough voltage at the cdi s overheating them and burning them out...that stuff happens all the time with those. But the newer 750 may not use the same cdi as the 650.
I have a 2001 750,  and the thing I worry about ( don't know if the 96 has this) is that mystery black box that clips onto the molded battery cover that covers the battery just under the seat. Now , it isn't really the little black box itself that concerns me ,it's the wires that connect the box to the electrical system. When charging or changing one of these batteries , you have to unclip the black box from the cover and the wires are too short to put the black box out of the way safely, there's no level surfaces to lay it on, the length of the wires won't allow you to just  flip it over onto the frame.... there's just no friggin place to put it while you F with the battery. That said it is the condition of the wires inside their plastic sleeves that concern me, sometimes wires can break inside the wire coating and from the outside it'll look good so who would suspect right ? But they can and do break on occasion like that and you wouldn't guess it's so until you multi meter both ends of each wire and find no ohms. I'm suspecting that you may have fallen victim to a wire breakage in this area from bending and falling movements over the years( if it is like the 2001 setup, it's bound to fail someday) perhaps this has happened on this machine?
A few Honda 500's, a few Honda 550's, a few Honda 650's, '72 cb 450, a couple 500/550/650 hybrids, and 2001 750.

All very good points. I just went through, checked and cleaned every harness connection..still hoping it it was somthing simple and stupid. Am really leaning towards just buying a new cdi on ebay. I figure if it doesnt work, I can just relist. No body offers returns on electrical.

That's a find, good luck.

I was wondering if a cheap chinese gy6 CDI would allow you to start and idle? It won't have any appropriate timing advance but for troubleshooting they can be useful sometimes.
