Why is chrome playing garbage compared to how it use to be
« on: July 16, 2020, 11:58:50 PM »
I’m sure this is an easy answer but why is chrome playing not like what it use to be? It seems like parts from the 60s and 70s the chrome was well done and thick and lasts long . Now whenever I buy modern parts that are chrome plated they look thin or pit within a few years

There are different levels of chrome plating quality.  The cheap parts have low quality plating, minimal layers.  "Show Chrome" is the high quality level and has become very expensive.

Metal processes have become excessively expensive, thanks to government regulations.  This includes the making of the metals, foundries, heat treating and the like.

Spoke with a plater today who is closing his shop, and retiring.
1. No one wants to pay for quality work.
2. Cheap chrome, after market parts cost less than replating!
4. The people that work for him “made him nuts”.
5. Local by laws and regulations “made him crazy”
6. The biggest reason: Disposing of used chemicals and rinses has gone up x5 in the past few years.....

im in the garbage removal industry, bout 15 years ago we did a job at a chrome plating place, they gotta de sludge and have neutralized their tanks every so often,it was done by an outside company we supplied the bins, was three x 3 cubic metre bins it cost em 25,000 bucks,we didnt empty the bins straight away they got sat down and stored for a coupla weeks for transport and time reasons, the bins have drain holes for rain, these bins leached all this copper green sulphate looking #$%* out of them and once emptied ive never seen heavy solid steel rust so fast?chrome is nice, the process is toxic.
