"78 CB750K Caliper rebuild kit compatability
« on: February 14, 2007, 08:38:21 PM »
Ok so I have a problem that seems to be common (based on forum searches), my front brake wants to keep breaking. So I am going to rebuild it. I have read about how to break it apart for the rebuild but, I want some assurance with a rebuild kit.
So here is the question will either of these fit my 1978 CB750K?

This fits CB750 F SUPER SPORT 1977 - 1980:

and this fits
CB750 K 1969 - 1976
CB750 A 1976
CB360 1974 - 1976
CB350 F CB400 F 1975 - 1977
CB500 T 1975 - 1976
CB350 G 1973
CB360 T 1975 - 1976
CB500 K FOUR 1971 - 1973
CB450 1970 - 1974

I would guess not.  The separtion of models/years above runs along the lines of years that Honda made changes.  You need to be especially picky with brake calipers because they frequently changed in design.

Beg to differ there. Most calipers until twin disc from the factory were the same and use the same piston seal although maybe a couple of different pistons.

Having said that there is only one seal in an SOHC caliper and its so cheap i would order the genuine Honda one for the bike!

Thanks, Brian; I stand corrected.  I was guessing based on the number of different part numbers for the brake calipers.

It took three tries to get the correct one for my 750f1, it was bigger than the k type.

First off, thanks for the impute. I'm going with bryanj here. First, I'll see if it needs to be replaced. If so, I know that the local Honda shop can order it for me (like the screw that has the spring so that the caliper can move which is bent). I was there earlier today and just showed the guy a parts break down of the caliper and pointed out parts. All were available to order. Now, if I could get the whole assembly from them I would consider the dual disk set up. I have seen it done on here and it looks pretty straight forward.

Whole calipers can be had on Ebay, too. You may find that a good used one can be
had for much less then the new Honda parts cost.  Even there, I would always go with a
new seal. You may find the problem is only gunk behind the piston.
