72 750 #3 cam rocker not loose
« on: September 01, 2020, 06:20:53 PM »
Hi
1972 cb750. Installing the cam, lines on cam match the heat notch is pointing up. According to the manual #1 intake and exhaust, #2 exhaust and #3 intake should have loose tappets for adjustment. # 3 intake is still on the cam. Any ideas?

Set both on #1, turn crank 1 full turn, set both on #4... did you do that ?

Hi
1972 cb750. Installing the cam, lines on cam match the heat notch is pointing up.
If the lines match up, with the the crankshaft at Top Dead Center, (the 1-4 "T" mark on the ignition advance plate) the cam is property timed.
The manual is referring to valve lash adjustment, not installing the cam.

Right now I am reassembling the engine. If I install the cam and rockers with the timing chain disconnected I should be able to adjust the valve tappet on #3 intake when the notch is up and the lines on the cam match the engine. This tappet is not loose. I’ve rotated the engine at least 50 times with the cam chain installed and realized the cam isn’t where the manual says it should be. All the rocker adjusters are backed all the way out

Install cam in cradles, get the cam sprocket timed properly and bolted to cam.
Loosen rocker adjuster bolts.  Start adding rockers and shafts, then start turning engine, and add more rockers as they are able to slide in.

I’ve done all this. Something is not jiving.
