My daughter and grandson just changed the belt on their lawn tractor, she messaged me being thankful for learning how to use tools. She and her sister each had a jr. dragster and often did the service on them.
In her first day of shop class, she was the only kid that could name all of the tools on the tool board.
  Made an old man proud.

My daughter and grandson just changed the belt on their lawn tractor, she messaged me being thankful for learning how to use tools....   Made an old man proud.

A year or so back, my wife and youngest daughter were out in one of the Crown Vics shopping and came out to find one of the rear tires was flat.  My daughter changed it in the rain, lugging the full size spare out of the trunk, knew where to jack the car up, was able to break the lug nuts loose with the folding speed wrench, and how to put the spare on correctly.  She said she remembered what I taught her and it was no big deal.  She commented several guys walked past without offering any help and she was a little surprised at that.  I told her it was because they probably didn't know how to change a tire.  I know what you mean about feeling proud.

I met a man that had no idea how to use simple tools
06-16-2025, 11:41 AM
A man and woman rode their bikes up to our house and asked if I would lend them a tool to fix the man's bike. "Sure, what do you need?" The man said he didn't know but the wife spoke up and said an allen wrench. No problem off I go to get some tools. I come back with a 1/2" ratchet and some allen wrench sockets to fit the ratchet. The man finally finds the right size for the bolt and proceeds to try to turn the bolt with just the socket, no ratchet. The wife is banging his arm with the ratchet for him to take it. He takes the socket off and tries to put the square of the ratchet into the bolt. The wife tells him to put the socket on the ratchet. He finally figures that out and then puts the allen into the bolt but the ratchet is set to loosen a bolt so he sits there cranking away on the ratchet non stop. Finally his wife steps in and tells him to let her do it. She handles the tools fine and makes short work of the job. I asked him what he did for a job and he tells me he is a social worker. During this whole thing one of my workers and I are sitting in chairs in front of our house being entertained and really trying hard not to roll on the ground laughing. He didn't seem to embarrassed at his lack of common sense and they went on their way. They were in their 30's. How could any person grow up and have never used any kind of tools.

I've noticed parts of Colorado ain't what it used to be. :D

I see your point simon, but I know how to do a lot of things that no one ever took the time to teach me, and I'll bet you do too.  Some people see the value of seeking out new skills and knowledge, and others are too busy on their phones or playing video games, or otherwise just not interested.  So maybe not stupid, but certainly not motivated.  It seems that someone who drives a car doesn't know how to change a tire is setting themselves up for a lot of inconvenience.  I'm glad I've learned some carpentry, plumbing, electrical, how to work on cars and bikes, fix our own appliances, welding and fabrication, the list goes on.  The internet makes acquiring new knowledge pretty easy, this forum being an example.  All it takes is a little gumption.  The idea of having to depend on someone else do things for me that I can do for myself makes me uncomfortable.  They will likely screw it up. ;)  Plus being able to do stuff has saved me a lot of money.

I used to pay a guy to swap rear end gears for me, after watching him do it a few times it needed different gears again but he had passed away. I learned how to set up the gears in honor of him. I've done a few for other guys since then. 9" ford, 12 bolt chevy, 8 3/4 mopar.
The last time my race powerglide didn't work I texted my trans guy and he suggested what was wrong. I found it and fixed it, I did buy some tools but haven't attempted a rebuild yet.

We weren't taught as much as what we learned playing. Anything with 2, 3, or 4 wheels was fair game to try and attach an engine to, and as we got older the engines got bigger. ;D

When I was...younger...the neighbor girl started a pop-bottle-rocket war with me and my brother one night while her mom was filming it with a video camera.
She was sitting Indian-style with her rockets lying in her lap. I put one right into the pile from about 60 feet away, setting off 3 of hers, got it all on video! Burned her jeans, too!

My brother and I visited a guy that was parting out goldwings. After seeing his parts I said we have the opposite problem, he asked what that was. I said you're parting nice riders, and we're restoring junkers.

I called my buddy in California, I was thinking about the 4th of July and spending the day with his family. He's Hispanic, born here in 1951 but thinking he'll self deport to Illinois.
He reminded me of one day walking home from Jr. high school and a chopped 49 Merc full of greasers came flying around a corner and the occupants threw beer bottles at us. He remembers being afraid, I remember how cool the car was.

The section of Illinois we live in is self described as Forgottonia. Our tax money leaves and they forget that we need infrastructure too. We even have a newspaper, the Forgottonia times.
