I went to a retirement party for one of my union business agents. His replacement was previously one of my apprentices.  He reminded me of the time I was welding fuel oil pipe at a small power generating plant and our old Lincoln Pipeliner wouldn't start. I was unusually agitated by the constant welding machine issues.
Apparently, I sent him to the truck for a torch tip and a coat hanger and promptly welded the last joint with the oxy-acetylene torch. That didn't surprise him as much as using the coat hanger for welding wire. I remembered the job but not the gas weld. L0L.
 And that's how I became a legend.

Another apprentice quoted me as saying we have done so much for so long with so little, we are now qualified to do anything with nothing. I think that was first said by a WW2 general.

Lol  ;D
I can certainly relate to that last part also !  You do what you need to do to get the job done.

Regarding the last two notes….. I used to work with a guy that would pick up all the zip ties in the shop and trim them down for reuse. He would rant at anyone who cut off the “latch” end instead of the “tail”. He would keep them in a bag and nothing pleased him more than reusing a long one three or four times!

We all laughed at him, but I still do it to this day.

Buddy of mine would use oxy-acetylene and coat hangers to weld things from time to time. Now days the wire in a lot of coat hangars isn't suitable I would bet. His welds held up very well. Jim was a mechanical engineer but ran his own well drilling and maintenance business. He decided corporate engineering world was not his cup of tea. He was a hard worker and very smart , but you had to get to know him before you caught on how intelligent he was... Quiet guy in that he didn't volunteer a lot until you became friends...
He played piano beautifully too.

I'm walking into the Wendy's and one of the employees walks by and sees my bike.
"Wow, what is that? A 1982 or something?"
"Nope, I got it new in January 1972".
"Wow. I wasn't even born yet."

I'm thinking he probably doesn't have the miles on him, either?

Hey Mark..
Guess you're being a little south of me in Colorado is a little different in terms of "younger generation" interest in our old rides [mine's a '77 550K BTW].  I rarely get a look or comment when I ride/park mine [up in 'nutsy' Boulder County].  Seemed more 'normal' to me here [in Longmont actually] before the whole State seemed to go 'woke' on us about 10 years or so now LOL.

Do you think we'll ever get back to a more moderate form of government in Colorado..before we kick the bucket my friend? [Hope Jerry Griffin also sees this post..can comment on that LOL]

Right now I'm in Japan..but coming back in another few days.  Always feels good to check and follow these SOHC4 posts..as we have for past couple of decades or so..   Know this post isn't exactly 'mood lightener of the day'..but felt prompted to chime-in here..

I think the only hope for CO is the term limits for guv. Except I don't see any heroes around here to replace him, probably end up with more of the same?
The 550 is coming to life around here: the 20-somethings like it better than the electric bikes they've been riding and then pedaling home, and the 500/550 are getting harder to find here as the result. I was only able to find a 500 engine (no bike) for the book I'm working on!

What CO really needs is a giant electric car-charging station - in Kansas. Then they can stall out somewhere around Wagon Wheel and watch the airplanes landing at the airport while staying out of this metro area.
;)

A man walks into a library and asks if they have any books on Pavlov's dog or Schrödinger's cat?  The librarian says well, it rings a bell but I'm not sure if it's here or not.
