CB350 starter delete

Hi All:

This is perhaps a dumb question, but I have to ask....

if I remove the starter on my CB/CL350, will oil puke out where the starter once was? See, I have an idea of chopping up the starter end cap and bolting it where the starter body once was. But to do so, I need to do a bit of filing/grinding. My fear is that I may not get the seal perfect, and hence oil will spill out.

Same as the CB450's and such, you are gonna need to buy/make/fab up some sorta
block-off plate of some kind. I am sure someone makes one you can pickup, if not make your own..

          Chris,   I'm not sure because I haven't dealt with freeze plugs in quite awhile, I'd be checking into   
    seeing if a standard freezeplug or a universal freeze plug. The regular freeze plug would probably look
    better. I think the main thing would be to keep trash and water out. Or you might could get a
    machine shop make an aluminum plug for it. Of course, it you are able to make one on your own, I'd
    say go for it. As far as I know, nobody offers anything for that. Hope that helps.

The expanding rubber freeze plug works great. I'm thinking that I couldn't find a metal one that fit? Metal would be better, the rubber one is a bit heavy.

I'm looking into making blanking plugs and also maybe a positive breather/catch tank to fit in there.
 Also  run hose from breather on cylinder head and have one way valve to lower internal engine pressure when  engines running

 I'm doing a 360 but starter end diameter is same as 350.
It will be similar to a pcv valve.

I have come up with a quick solution. I bought a 2" pipe plug at Lowe's for about $2.60 and ground down the rubber bushing to match the diameter of the backing disk. A person could cut the carriage bolt shorter and use a nut if you wanted it to look a little nicer.

All of these starter drive are grenedes with the pin pulled. loose that #$%*e and live on the road a little longer. I have had several explode on me and I was left with only the battery to get me home.

           Hey Terry,
                       If you know the thickness of gasket paper, you could get the paper and cut your own gaskets (except of course the head gasket). I've cut gaskets, in the past, using a side cover, the paper and a very small ball peen hammer. You cut the paper to be slightly larger than the piece, use the flat end of the hammer head to to trim the gasket down to size (by lightly tapping on the outer edge of the gasket surface, which will cut through the paper, going all the way around the piece you are working on. Then trim out the inside of the gasket by lightly tapping along on the inner edge of the gasket surface). Once the gasket is cut out, then you go around to all the holes (one at a time) and, using the ball peen end of the hammer, lightly tap into each hole until the paper is cut out to leave a hole. Once you do all the holes, you will have a perfectly good gasket. It does take some practice to be able to do this without messing the gasket up and might not seem worthwhile to some. When I assembled my first streetbike, at the age of 14, my Dad sat me down with a thermostat housing from a car motor, some paper and a small ball peen hammer and told to do it until I could give him a good gasket. He and my Grandfather didn't believe in buying something, if you could make it yourself. I hope that what I've just described isn't clear as mud. ;D

Way to think out of the box. A stainless acorn nut would work prefectly on the end of the bolt. Here's what I ended up doing:

      Hey Raul,  that's a pretty cool piece there. Am I wrong in my thinking, because I'm thinking that the 350 and the 450 starters have the same dimensions. I haven't really compared them all side by side but they pretty much look the same. I sent them a question about that. Thanks for posting it.  Bill :) ;)

       Just for the info, I sent them a message to ask about the 450 cause I wasn't sure if they would be the same size or not and he said it's the same price. He never did say if they were the same size or not. Any way, if any one would want one for their 450/500T, here you are. ;)

I've seen that machined MG plug. It is pretty cool, but I'm not real fond of the "MG" text on it. The TTr400 bit is a catch tank for crankcase breathers and carb overflows. If my cap doesn't work, I think I'll go with TTR400 bit. Nothing says "Cool bike" like craftsmanship.

¿So what? You can always put a "Live to ride" sticker over it, or ask them to sell you one without the name. I also think the engraving is out of place. It's good to do some advertising, but that's not the place.

¿So what? You can always put a "Live to ride" sticker over it, or ask them to sell you one without the name. I also think the engraving is out of place. It's good to do some advertising, but that's not the place.

              Raul, when you're right, you're right. Good point. I actually never even thought of asking them to leave the MG off. Guess I didn't figure that they would. I'll have to check that out and, even if they won't, may get one anyway, they are cool looking. 8)
