78 Cb750K oil issue
« on: July 24, 2020, 12:13:00 PM »
Hello. New to this group. I have found a decent amount of info for my project I just got, but I can’t find anything on my current issue. From what I have read it is around 3-4 quarts for an oil change on these bikes roughly. Currently I put 2.5 quarts in and the oil tank is right full. I want to guess one of the oil lines going to the case is plugged, but before I just willy nilly replacing them, I am curious if there are any common issues about this. Thanks.

Two different amounts depending on wether you drained the engine sump and changed filter as well
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Its about 3 quarts if you drain the oil tank and the engine sump plus the oil filter.

In my earlier days when I would do an oil change I would just dump all 4 qts in her. Really was never concerned if it was over the fill line on the stick as long as it wasn'toverflowing which it never did.
All that being said have you started the bike yet so the oil gets into the engine and if so are you seeing circulation in the oil tank while its running ? Flashlight if needed will help see the bubbles and movement etc..

Sorry for the late response. Bike is currently not running as the electrical was cut up when I got it. Will check when I get the bike running

The oil will not just run down through the oil line and into the crankcase via gravity or if it does seep past a check valve it will take awhile. If and when the engine is started it will exit the tank. Earlier bikes I think call for 3.7 qts,not sure on the K8.

Awesome, thank you very much. I kicked it over a few times and the oil hadn’t dropped any and that’s what made me most concerned.

If the engine is bone dry of oil you can pour some through a tappet inspection cover, they are the 8 round ones on the valve cover, to get some oil into the pan. You just have to keep in mind how much is already in the tank so you don't overfill.
