Anyone from Iowa ? DOT motor vehicle registration question.
« on: August 03, 2020, 07:29:44 AM »
I'm considering buying a good used motorcycle from Iowa and driving it back to where I live, out of state.
I want to see if the local DOT in Sioux City would be able to issue me a temporary plate to get home with on a one-way ride.Do you know if that's possible ?  Bill

I don't live in Iowa but have been researching. Is this a private sale or dealer sale?
It's not specific to cars or bikes but you might look into an In-Transit Permit.
https://iowadot.gov/mvd/buyingselling/buyingselling/misc#30153550-in-transit-permits

"Vehicles purchased from a dealer by a nonresident.  This allows the nonresident to drive the vehicle to the buyer's home state for any required titling and registration."

"The permit must be displayed in the rear window of the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle must have a sales invoice verifying the sale, and the invoice shall be signed by the dealership.

All information required on the in-transit permit must be entered by the dealer. The permits are void 15 days after the date they are issued by the selling dealer."

There's always Vermont Registration.

Alan,
This will be a private sale of a Honda motorcycle which runs,I plan on driving it back.I was wondering if I can go to the DOT tag office and get a temp/paper? plate to get me back to where I reside.

Well, best to write directly to the Iowa DMV then to see what can be done for this situation.

I don't know if a phone call will work.

What model of bike are you looking at and hopefully you trust the sellers word on condition of the tires and mechanicals etc.. Are you flying out there to Iowa if you get it if the deal goes forward ?

Honda CB650 Nighthawk,always wanted one.
The thing about it is,"if the deal goes forward"  ::)
I'm taking the Zephyr.
I'm waiting on $ to go get it,then I'm on my way.
I only have my 200cc CB125,sold my other bike, need this.

Edit:Well,I decided against doing the trip out there for this bike:I changed my mind about getting this one.
