We have an old weapons vault and I have, what my Dad says, is the combination. But we can not get it open. He tried numerous times, when he still had his wits about him and could not open it. I have tried numerous times. The combination is a 4 digit one and there is a small chrome knob in the middle of the dial (knob, what ever you call it), that you twist, at some point. Dad says that when you get to the 3rd number, you twist it. The only time I can get it to move, is when you get to "0". I have no idea which way to start turning it, to get to each number. Any input wopuld be appreciated. I have tried going online with no help. Thank you for looking.

A lot of those you have to go right left and a complete turn right. You might have to have a pro locksmith come over or call them give them the info and they might be able to help.

Any numbers or letters on the dial, or around the dial?

I've seen various approaches of four number combination instructions. For example, here are the Sargent & Greenleaf instructions for a four combination lock:

1. Starting anywhere, turn the dial right (clockwise), stopping when the first combination number comes to
the opening index the FIFTH time.
2. Turn the dial left (counterclockwise), stopping when the second number comes to the opening index the
FOURTH time.
3. Turn the dial right, stopping when the third number comes to the opening index the THIRD time.
4. Turn the dial left, stopping when the fourth number comes to the opening index the SECOND time.
5. Turn the dial slowly to the right until it comes to a positive stop, indicating the bolt has retracted.

If the last number is a 0 (zero), it is a three number lock.

Well folks, about 30 minutes ago, with info from "kandrtech", I got the door opened, on the arms vault. Lets just say that there were some hand guns in there, along with ammo and holsters. Also, some parts of guns. Still have to determine what they are.

And, the funny thing is, my Dad had put an index card in there, with complete instructions, to open the vault and a smaller safe, along with the combinations.

Yeah, okay............. Buddy, you sure made my Day. Some of the contents, was supposed to be mine and some were supposed to be his. BUT, since he pulled the things he did (or attempted to), my Dad disowned him and left everything to me. I would rather have a Good Brother, than all of it, but HE made his decision and cost him everything! And, Like I Said, He Made HIS choice!

If any of the mystery parts and pieces appear to be from military surplus weapons, I'll be happy to help identify them for you. I have some experience in that area. Civilian firearms I know less about, but I'd be willing to give it a shot.

I did find a Smith & Wesson 45 cal Automatic. I wondered about that, as I already had seen a 45 holster on a military web belt.

Bill which model Smith and Wesson. The 45 decickers like the 5906 are great guns and they come in 45.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your dad. I've been interested in curio and relic firearms for a while and would be happy to help you identify anything you may be unsure of. If you've got your dad's old service pistol with belt and all that other gear, it is certainly much more valuable as a set, especially as the centennials of the World Wars get closer, and the same for any war bring backs. Personally, I'd have a hard time giving up any of that heirloom sort of stuff, I've still got my dad's 50's era army poncho, trench coat with wool liner, mess kit and other stuff. Can't help it, I'm a collector. : )

Folks, I came back to this, because I hadn't even been into the Vault, for some time. I have had a lot of different things going on and anyway,
I felt I had better get back in there, check things out, service as needed & generally make sure everything is in good shape. To much crap
going on now days & though I don't expect any problems, doesn't hurt to make sure. As I can, I'll put out more info, on what I have here. I
decided to come back on here & see what other posts might have been made. And seeing what I have, I will try to answer the questions, the
best I can. So, til then.

Those are NICE pistols! My ex-boss's son bought one in 2009, cost him over $1100 back then. Very smooth, very accurate with MIL ball. After looking it over (carefully) I implemented some of the S&W Performance Center 'tricks' to some of mine, and it really smoothed them out. Gonna do all of them one day...but first, I need to find a mill: at the time the shop had one I used, but they went out of business in 2016, letting me go in the process.

A couple years ago I got to spend some time with Les Baer, the custom 45 auto guy. He showed my car club his collection of fords, mostly low mile original Mustangs, nothing restored or bodywork. A few cobras and Mopar hemi cars but we didn't see any guns. Every new car requires a lift because the old gun factory is full up. While we were there he noticed someone stole one of his gate guard bombs.
He did talk about his guys hand fitting every slide and him personally shooting every gun before it leaves the factory.

Man, those Les Baer 1911s have to be the tighest-fitted ones made today! It is said that after several thousand rounds it finally loosens up enough to take them apart easily, and they run flawlessly. The pieces I have bought from him for mine are first-rate parts.

Les has a factory in Pa. and assembly is done in LeClare Iowa, when flying back and forth, the security people who recognize him are always calling him to the side showing him their Baer 45's. On occasion he will come to our car cruise with hit Toterhome and a Boss 429 Mustang and a 426 Hemi Cuda inside.

It is, Les invited our car club to another tour of his car collection. The last time we were well behaved and also got an invitation to see his personal shop. It looks like a 60's soda shop inside, the Lavitory sink is made from a hemi oil pan. Boss mustang and hemi cuda in the room and there is no garage door.
My daughter and son in law just bought a home with a weapons vault in the basement. That makes him the heir apparent to a few weapons I may or may not have.
