CB750 K1 with windjammer
« on: July 28, 2020, 12:08:59 PM »
Hi,

I'm planning to purchase this CB 750 K1. A month ago you guys saved me from a bad deal (http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,183293.msg2127002.html#msg2127002), thanks for that!

Can someone tell more about windjammer, is actually factory or dealer add on the bike?
What does the NY issued plate number means? Does it indicate that engine and frame number mismatch?
Anythings else your experienced eyes see that I should check before closing the deal?

Thank you!

They were 3rd party items added on. They're nice if you ride long distance to protect from wind fatigue.

Dealer installed popular back in those days.

It is a New York vin replacement tag, very unusual.
Is there a metal tag of left side of neck and vin stamped on right side of neck ?

I've bought 750's with Jammers before. I always remove them and try and give them away but usually end up tossing them. Most of the time if you remove you will need a headlight bucket or at least the chrome ring and bulb. Can't tell if yours still has the fork ears, hopefully so. Be prepared for some spliced wires but not that big of a deal. Sometimes the frame gets damaged a little from over tightening the fairing bracket. Yours does not have the stock front blinkers to salvage. Also see the stock handlebars are changed for clearance purposes, lots of times set-backs are used. Add in shorter brake line clutch cable, etc. if you want stock. Hopefully for you it makes the price a little less with it on.

This one is a lot more honest than the last one you were looking at.  No one's done a lot of cosmetic work to make it look better than it really is, it's just an old bike - warts and all.  Is it a runner?  Any known issues? How much are they asking for it?  As far as the Windjammer goes, they work well but a lot of folks don't like the looks of them and it usually costs a couple hundred in parts to put them back to stock.

Exactly, it's more honest, plus the previous bike's owner gave a bit suspicious info that obviously didn't match with the images.
Yes, it's a runner. It's a vintage motorcycle re-seller so he doesn't know all the details/history about the bike. Price is $2,300 without a title.

Is it located in your country or still here in the USA ? Price on that one with no title as it sits would be considered a little steep over here.

Between the replacement VIN plate and the lack of a title, I think that you could have some serious issues importing and licensing that.  Or it might not matter depending on your country's laws.  I'd research that aspect of it very carefully.  For what you're looking for and where you're located you probably won't do much better than that so long as you can import and license it.  Depending on where in the US the seller is located, they may be able to get a title with some effort.

There were no titles in NY until 1973 or 74.  All bikes before that have a non-transferable registration.  This is the proof of ownership and has to be signed over to new owner when sold.  The new owner then has to present the signed non-transferable registration plus a form to get a new non-transferable registration in their name.  I assume the original non-transferable registration was lost and someone else tried to register it with no official proof of ownership.  Thats probably why the DMV required an inspection and then they put their sticker on it and issued it a new VIN.  Either way you would need the last non-transferable registration or some other official NY document to show proof of ownership.

Personally if there were frame numbers stamped on the left side, I would go the Vermont Registration route and register it with those numbers.  I would then pull that sticker off.  You can always get a replacement VIN tag in the original style.

Lots of bikes and parts are transported in containers to Europe from USA and sold as parts. eBay UK and Germany sell a lot.
It is popular by some sellers to refurbish wheel hubs, giving them new rims and spokes, sold as complete wheels.

As parts OK when having a title.

I'll pick up a frame next week. CB750 K2 1973 with a registrated title. I'll buy it as a complete bike officially.
I have most of the other parts.
I might give it my K1 engine project or I'll find other K2 engine cases with 1973 number.

I think it will be easier for you in Riga to find a bike in Germany, import it as usual.
Like cars where many countries in Europe have done in many years. Getting a lower priced good car from Germany.

Seller says he can get a title for around $300, thus total would be $2,600. For K1 seems reasonable at least by going through Craigslist, Ebay, Marketplace, Proxibid etc.

That is wayyyyy too much for any vehicle without a title.

Thanks, checking this right now. In short to get it registered here (and European Union as well) I need the bike to be registered in the US, if seller get's the title in the US, then ir should be fine.

There were no titles in NY until 1973 or 74.  All bikes before that have a non-transferable registration.

Hey Scott...I bought a K2 ['72] from NY and it came with a transferable registration. Was used like a title and I was able to get a TX title with no problem.

OP - That bike possibly had an issue at some point and that is why the State of NY issued a new VIN.  Could have been stolen or just never had a title if it was originally from NY. Does it have the VIN stamped on the neck of the frame?  If no...stolen!
