XR650L stripped carb bowl screw - how to remove?
« on: July 25, 2020, 10:55:29 AM »
Working on the carbs off a Honda XR650L and of course one float bowl screw is stuck:
1. Using JIS screwdriver
2. Tried to drill it out - didn’t work

Now have this...

How do I get it off?

Thanks
Andy

MikeR solved it - small vice grips worked like a charm

I usually reach for these little guys, or drill the head off the screw.

I replace them with socket head cap screws, so it never happens again. ;)

this tool is also sold at Sears and I've used it many times. Works better than vise-grips as you can get closer.

dremmel rotary tool and grind the screw head off.
then the bowl should come off.
Try vice grips on the remaining screw.  Use lots of isopropy alcohol on the screw , it is a great lubricant for this but it evaporates quickly.  Lots of back and forth wiggling to let the alcohol get in.

edit. looking again you may not need to grind the head off.  but lots of alcohol really helps.  On the screw though, not drinking until the job is done.
