CB350F power loss
« on: August 04, 2020, 09:39:51 AM »
Hi, this is Evan W, a new member from Winters CA. I've owned a ‘73 CB 350F since 2006. It was running when I bought it but it had been wrecked and the tank was dented and some of the front end parts were off a CB 350 twin. I rode it and worked on it over the years and got it cleaned up pretty good. After a period of little use it developed carburetor problems and sat unused for a number of years. I decided to get it going this spring. There are lots of details to the story but this is the short version.

I removed and cleaned the carburetors, reassembled them and put all back together. Glory be, it ran well, with plenty of power, torque and response. To finish the job I decided to change the oil. When I tried to remove the drain plug the oil pan cracked across the drain hole.To make it easier to get the oil pan off I removed the fuel tank and battery and laid the bike down on its right side. I removed the oil pan, stood the bike up and repaired the oil pan. I laid it down again, replaced the oil pan, stood it back up and replaced the tank and battery and put a new oil and filter.

The bike starts and idles OK. It will rev up when not under load and can be ridden at a low power level. When I crank on the throttle it dies, all four cylinders together as if I hit the kill switch.

The timing seems OK and the spark advance is working. I seem to have come to the end of my ability on this. Any suggestions?
