Exhaust Reinstall
« on: August 07, 2020, 09:33:58 AM »
I'm chasing down a possible exhaust leak and am going to remove and reinstall my 4 into 1 on my '76.  Ordered new crush gaskets.  Is it necessary to use liquid gasket as well?

Are the joint nuts standard torqued?

No liquid gasket is required, but I usually use a smear of grease to hold the copper crush rings in place while reinstalling the head pipes. Without something to hold them in they tend to fall out. Torque wise the nuts don't ever really bottom out in my experience and the crush gaskets do the sealing so they don't need to be super tight.

I don't use anything with the crush gaskets.
They do the job, most things can't handle the heat.
Don't overtighten, the threads are fragile.

+1.  After removing your exhaust, be sure the old crush washers are removed from the head, they can sometimes be hard to see. Maybe PO didnt remove?

Good point Stev-0. The gaskets can be quite black from carbon over the years and the crush pretty flat, so it can look like there isn't one in there when there is.

Will do.  I suspect they may have been off before and probably reused the gaskets.  Thanks for the help guys.

High probability there.  Let us know how it goes.

Got the exhaust off and it's now sitting in my living room waiting to be cleaned before reassembly.

Doesn't look like there was anywhere there could be a leak.

None of the seals came out with the pipes.  Assuming that's what I'm looking at any tips for getting them out?

The oil is seeping from above.

They never come out with the exhaust pipes. You need to pry them out with a stout curved pick ir a flat blade screwdriver, whatever you can get between them and the casting. Once they start they will come out pretty easily.

+1...pick 'em out.

Looks like a good time for a coat of high temp paint on that engine while the pipes are off!

Take a brass brush or light wire brush to the fins to clean off the oxidation before you respray the motor with some paint first.

I did.  I might spray the posts but the fins look good now.

I got the crush seals out today with a small pry bar and a few light taps.

Here's the head side.  I'm hoping #4 is telling o the exhaust leak.
