No liquid gasket is required, but I usually use a smear of grease to hold the copper crush rings in place while reinstalling the head pipes.
+1. After removing your exhaust, be sure the old crush washers are removed from the head, they can sometimes be hard to see. Maybe PO didnt remove?
Good point Stev-0. The gaskets can be quite black from carbon over the years and the crush pretty flat, so it can look like there isn't one in there when there is.
