650 Rear Sprocket Chain Guard/Cage/Shield Thing
« on: August 08, 2020, 11:28:50 AM »
Our bikes have that shield on the rear sprocket to help prevent wrapping the chain around the axle. From what I remember the 550’s have them just bolted using the sprocket bolts. The 650’s however (at least from ‘79) have them riveted to the sprocket. The new sprocket I just got doesn’t have holes for installing the shield so I was going to drill them out and re-rivet it back on. But do people keep these on or toss them if they get damaged?

Shameless plug: I have a post in the wanted section for a 650 sprocket with the cage still on. Mine is damaged and I’d like to put a good one on. If you’ve got one hit a brother up.

Thanks stevo. I was doing a little reading and the consensus is that it probably won’t hold a whipping chain anyway so it’s not really a safety concern. Honda apparently called it a splash guard whatever the hell that means. I’m going to bin it and move on. If it was in good shape and an easy bolt-on then I’d keep it but I don’t want to spend more effort riveting it on. Just time and money when it’s not really needed.

On the K4, Honda calls it a Sprocket side plate and it's discontinued.  We've had this discussion a time or two and seems every one has their own opinion on whether to use it or not. The plate on my K4 had been chromed by the PO, is in excellent cond, so it has just stayed on.
