Best Rock Concerts We've Been To
« on: February 15, 2007, 05:31:55 PM »
Led Zeppelin at Madison Square Garden 1975.
A 17 year-old's favorite group playing for 4 hours ALL the big hits then their playing Physical Graffitti before the album was even released was...heavy.

Jetthro Tull at Madison Square Garden 1975. Ian Anderson is the ultimate rock-performer.

ELP accomponied by the NY Philharmonic Madison Square Garden 1977. Very cool.

Beach Boys at (where else?) MSG 1971. My 1st live concert. Fun, Fun, Fun.

Jefferson Airplane/Starship in Central Park 1975 Free Concert. Every high school kid in NY cut school that day. (I only tried it once but I did not inhale (cough).

Rat Race Choir at Hot Dog Beach Summer of '75

my 13th birthday my dad was driving us back to his house from mom's for the weekend.  my best friend adam was with us for the weekend.  i was so pissed that motley crue was in town for the dr. feelgood tour and i didn't get to go.  the whole drive took about 2 hours and when we arrived in manhattan, ks... we saw the motley crue plane sitting on the runway of the small local airport.  they decided to let me in on the secret that we had tickets to the concert.  ROCK!!!  this first concert for me was pivotal... scantily clad women, scantily clad tommy lee on a drumset rigged above us, debauchery live...

couple of years ago at the colorado state fair... cheap trick and alice cooper.
cheap trick was very cool but, alice may be the best performer i've ever seen.

if there is a "worst" category... garth brooks

I saw Three Dog Night perform on the ball field after a Chattanooga Lookouts game.  The venue was small and the beer was well priced.  Wind blown bikers filled the lower seats.  Everyone knew all the lyrics.  It was a blast.

An equally exhilarating concert was Page and Plant in Nashville.  A couple of guys in front of us were sharing a jay and security came after them, shouting from the aile above the loud music.  The crowd around the two, including me, collectively shouted back ("Leave 'em alone!") until the guards left.  Vive le smoke!

Classical Gas, followed by Gary Wright, followed by Santana, with Peter Frampton for the finale.  July 1975 outdoors inside a thoroughbred horse track.  Tulsa, OK.

First one was Led Zep and Lee Michaels at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco......I believe it was 1972.....only cost $6.50 a ticket!!!!!  Saw Lynard Skynard twice before the plane crash....very memerable. Seen the Stones on a day on the green show in Oakland(collosium).Seen Frank Zappa in San Diego about 1975 (navy days....seen alot of concerts in San Diego-1975). One of the rockinest shows I saw was Blue Oyster Cult,Aerosmith,& Ted Nugent.......great show!!!!!!! A few bands that I wished I could have seen......Jethro Tull,Deep Purple,Pink Floyd,Beatles sure would have been cool to see at the end of their time (like 1968-69) but I was only 11-12 years old then!!

Scored a free ticket to see Rolling Stones at Sydney Cricket Ground
Corporate Box - all the food and drink laid on (20 people in the box) - waiters/waitresses very posh
Arrived early  - did a few numbers with the rest of the crowd (state managers, big shots)
Out on the balcony  - directly in front  - sniffing the haze - danced up a storm (or so I was told)
Went home (3 hour trip on a train) very cold - but with two bottles of nice wine and two extremely nice women...totally amazing experience)
the stones were #$%*......everyone booed keith richards when he tried to sing a solo......

Shower of Stars - Pittsburgh - Civic Arena - ~1968  Vanilla Fudge

The Fudge started playing and most of the crowd gathered around the stage. Security didn't know what to do. The lead singer stops and says " If everyone doesn't get back in their seats, they (the Arena) are going to stop the concert, BUT WERE GOING TO PLAY ANYWAY". The crowd went crazy. They turned on the lights but the band played on. It was incredible.

I saw the Doors twice, Steppenwolf and the Jefferson Airplane all great concerts but the Fudge were the best.

Another good one was at the Cow Palace in San Francisco.....Blue Oyster Cult with Ronnie Montrose and Gamma.....late 70's seen a few good shows at the Santa Clara Co. fairgrounds back in early 70's....Tower of Power,Humble Pie,Foghat,Cold Blood......not all at the same show but different times. Anyone remember a band called The Sons Of Champlin? Saw them at the old Marine World in Redwood City.

The Queers back in '05 with the Independents opening.  Bad-ass show.  Played a bunch of great songs, including covers of "Slug" by The Ramones and "Get Over You" by The Undertones.  Then The Vibrators, who were hanging out on tour with the Queers, came up and played a few songs.  Good classic punk!

Then in early '06, I saw Teenage Bottlerocket, The Phenomenauts and The Epoxies at the same show.  Rocked my Face off!

Nerf Herder in '03 or '04.  That was a great show.  And Ash in '03.

Prince Nelson Rogers - early 90's Wembley Arena, then straight on to an after show gig that he played, I blagged an invite because my mate's sister worked for his record company 8) Thanks Nik ;D

It would have been Donington, Monsters of Rock - '88  Maiden headlined and were awesome, but it was the year Guns n Roses also appeared, and two fans died in the mosh pit at the front during their set :( So now I remember it for the wrong reasons :(

I'm told my first ever gig was John Mayall's Bluesbreakers in September '70, but I don't remember much of it because I wasn't born until December ;D Mum reckons I must have enjoyed it though because I didn't keep still all night :o

Yes in 72 right as "Fragile" was released  Years later "Yes" in the round
Brownsville Station
Tommy James and the Shondells -First concert I ever attended
ELP -twice. one concert had the infamous Quadraphonic sound system
Alice Cooper "Billion Dollar Babies" and "Welcome To My Nightmare" shows
ZZ Top
Damn Yankees
 Georgia Satellites

I am sure there are more but they have turned up the lights after the warm up band finished and I can't see the rest for all the smoke
in the arena.

Guns n' Roses in Budapest just after the wall came down. The place was hoppin. Added bonus a full on lightniing storm going on behind the stage. Fantastic show and I'm not even a huge GnR fan.

Man, it's a bit down memory lane, no?  I know this won't really fit in, but the best concert I ever saw -- hands down -- was Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes.  I saw them in a small venue when they were touring with the Tower of Power.  He's a showman, and the energy was unbelievable.  Number two on my list would be Bowie in Philly during the Serious Moonlight tour.  I'd also toss in Ray Davies and the Kinks because it was such a fun concert.

From what I can remember, I had a blast at Ozzfest....

Oh, that was such a good time.  I saw #$%* going on that I never imagined could or would happen at a open air concert.  I had back stage passes, but only stumbled back stage once.  Lets just say clothing was optional for the girls.  NICE!

Best by far for me was my first Phish concert at Austin Music Hall in '95, but the Flaming Lips/ Ween concert at Red Rocks last year is right up there.

Wrong... the worst concert ever has to be the American Idol turd of a show that my wife dragged me to. Delayed 45 minutes, then crap performances. UGH. I only went because I love my wife and she really wanted to go.

boy am i ever feeling young. i could only dream of seeing any of those great bands back in the seventies. i wasn't born till '80. but anyway the best for me was last summer at The Rock Fest in KC. it was hotter than the hubs of hell. saw a lot of great bands in the huge park. Shinedown, Staind, Buck Cherry, Black Stone Cherry, Three Days Grace, Candlebox. there was seriously about 15 bands.

close second was Rob Zombie and Anthrax at Kansas collisium. never been a huge Anthrax fan, but they blew the place up.

Worst concert... oh, it pains me to tell this.  I was in high school, I was dating this chick (getting laid) and she and I, and some friends went to see Vanilla Ice in concert.   It was horrible from start to finish.  I would rather staple my sack to my leg than do something like that again.  Yuck!
