Brake lights stop flashing when running lights connected
« on: August 11, 2020, 08:12:50 AM »
Sooo, years ago I installed one of those flashers for my brake lights.
Flashes slow then fast then solid, or something like that.
Got new tail lights, turn/running/brake.

When the running lights are NOT connected (or when I use the lights off switch), the brakes flash like they are supposed to.

When the running lights are connected (or light switch set to on), the brake lights simply go on or off like normal, no flashing.

I am guessing that I need a diode or something on the running wire that will allow the brakes to flash as desired?

Thoughts?
Thanks!

EDIT: the new tail lights are LED... they have 4 wires, God, turn, brake and running.
Was mentioned that the rear isn’t supposed to have running...hmmm... pretty sure the originals that were on there, on this bike, lit up when no brake was applied and just got brighter with brake.

You shouldn't need any diode. There may be some wiring weirdness at the brake light: its bulb is the only place where the circuits meet, the tail light and brake light circuits are otherwise separate. I still don't see how they would interact that way though...

You are not supposed to have running lights at the rear
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Original rears are amber and signals only. Here at least, all brake lights must be red, although red combined brake/signals are allowed. The stock harness does not have marker lamp power wires to the rear - you just have the tail light wire... not ideal for rear markers.
For rear marker plus signal lights it's best to add wiring that carries the two wires for the front markers back to the rears, so the marker will go out when signalling.
If you want the rear signals as markers plus brake and signal lights, that gets rather complicated and you need more than just diodes. A trailer light conversion module can be used. These take separate signal and brake light circuits and combine them for a trailer with just two tail plus brake/signal lamps so both come on bright for braking but one side will flash - braking or not - if the tow car's turn signals are activated. You would still need the front marker wires extended to the rear to correctly do the marker function.
