Anyone else find this Amusing ? NEWBIES ..
« on: August 13, 2020, 09:26:12 AM »
I always find it amusing when people are new to a forum, and do this...
Join up , ask for advice, then try to set up guidelines  regarding how we are allowed to respond to them.. don't bother  if you reply like  this, or like so...  yeah alright..
Just don't wonder when people stop answering your questions..

Yes, the guys that want/need a specific answer yet they still ask the question.

I can see how someone could become jaded by all the other online forums and expect harsh treatment right off the bat, but I agree it's not really the best way to start off a post asking for help.  It's a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy.  You get what you give, and someone who's the type of person to give you a hard time just for asking a question isn't the type of person who's going to listen when you tell them not to.

One thing I've noticed lately is noobs asking for advice, then giving advice to other noobs. ;D

As a newb, I am guilty of all of this. In defense of us newbs, it's pretty intimidating to post something in a forum filled with experts who probably shook Mr. Honda's hand at the CB750 introduction in 1969.  I definitely think twice before moving my quivering mouse pointer to the "new post" button.

If nothing else, we provide entertainment for the locals.

Fire away on your questions, don't worry too much. Place would be boring otherwise and we would have to talk about beer or something  ;D

jeff d, the fact that you feel intimidated means that you, at least, might listen to a correct answer...not that I necessarily have any for you.  And, if you listen, you might learn some things.  So, not so guilty after all.

Asking questions is fine, but giving answers when it's obvious you have no clue what you are talking about is different. ::)

I still read new (to me) info from time to time in answer to these questions, that's what it's all about for me.

Even old timers take the bait on oil threads.  I won't do that here.  Besides, I only use sesame seed oil which is natural therefore the best.

I recently posted about an ignition issue (no spark). I was dubious about the advice I got from an old timer, but I followed it anyhow. Goddammit, they were right!

I've noticed over the years when a noob asked a question certain members (some who haven't been around here for a while) would jump all over them with responses like, "Go back and read the FAQ's" and grill them for no other reason than to establish their self esteem, when it was just as easy to answer the question.

Whenever I join a new forum I explain that while I might be new to that particular marque, I'm not new to motorcycles, so basically, don't give me any crap, unless you're ready to get some back. I did get kicked off one forum, but it was no loss, it was way to "cliquey" for my liking, and the mod who took umbrage to my returning fire was as dumb as dogsh1t anyway..... ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I remember when I was new here, I came with questions too, but I came with a shop manual, I had rebuilt a few engines before  so questions weren't basic information that one couldn't track down through the shop manual glossary. Once I was turned on to the search button and could track down other project threads that would be an answer or an alternative answer without bugging people with what seems like basic questions, the possibilities seemed endless. Going through older threads and new project threads it was refreshing to see the vast amount of knowledge owned by members,  but not only was the wealth of information abundant, but the ease of which other members offered this information was unlike any other forum that I had visited previously. Everyone here was connected, on the same page, genuinely interested in projects and were always willing to give information or opinions in a respectful fashion . I have seen very little of that on other forums before and sometimes none of that on other forums at all. Any forum is only as good as the members who participate on it. This forum is the best I've ever come across and it's because of everyone here and what they bring to the table. I 'm guessing ,and I could be wrong but I think that newbies, especially in the past few years have been met with no respect , for no other reason than others trying to pump up their own self esteem by running an ongoing pissing match instead providing assistance and comradary with others that share the same interest on other forums. That almost never happens here. All you guys are the greatest, and the decency in which we interact with others that we may never meet is so much more than refreshing that it actually gives me hope for a better future....that being said, abused newbs don't know that yet ,  they don't know how special this site really is and they are trying to lay some ground rules to "feel out" the group that they hope to identify with as a defense mechanism and the I  don't care what you think attitude is a pie crust shield, easily broken when they realize what they have stumbled upon here, where our interest is our common bond. Hey , I could be wrong about some of them, but I'm not wrong about the members, I've said it before, you guys are great.
A few Honda 500's, a few Honda 550's, a few Honda 650's, '72 cb 450, a couple 500/550/650 hybrids, and 2001 750.
