Forks and fork ears
« on: August 27, 2020, 07:56:48 AM »
Replacing neck bearings after wrapping up the engine rebuild on a Cb750 K5 not intending to do the forks but went into them to freeze the tree to get that bearing on. One of the ears has two small holes the width of a pencil, planning on order a pair of ears from eBay. Three questions:

1.) lots of rust on the fork tube (see photo), but only underneath the ears. Seems like I should be ok to clean them up and reuse them as the rust isn’t in the functional portion of the tube. Any reasons that isn’t ok?

2.) Any recommendations for sources of the tubes or ears?

3.) if I leave the tubes is it ok to reuse the seals on the ears? The ears have a big hole (the seal-less square hole that’s supposed to be there where the tree comes out) on the side, so it’s not like the seals are keeping out all the moisture, just some of it. If I garage keep the bike, maybe those ear seals are not a big deal?

Would love to get this back together before fall and maybe come back to the forks. Ship times on all these parts are so slow with covid. Last order from Partzilla took 3 weeks even though the distribution center is 3 hours away

Yamiya has all the parts, shipping is terrible right now.
All rubber parts are very old, I would not re-use.

Rust at the top is no problem as long as no pitting where seal goes, the rubbers on the ears dont seal they only insulate the ears from vibration

I purchased a set of ears from DSS.  Pleased with the quality.  As far as freezing the tree, I think you wanted to freeze the bearing and heat the tree.

This. I wouldn't worry about it as long as there is no rust in the fork travel area.

Awesome thanks everyone!

Noticing these rubber pieces between the reflector and turn signal. They look like maybe an aftermarket add for cable routing through them? Not seeing them on any diagrams or on image searches of ‘75 cb750s. Are they stock?

Never seen anything like them standard on a Honda so must be an obscure accessory

You got that bass-ackwards. ;) You heat the hole to expand it, and freeze the dick to shrink it. ;D
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!
