Now for some reason that escapes me completely, I apparently have a reputation for dissing all CB750's that are not K0-K6? Well, that's sort of true, I was never a big fan of the K7/8 or F/F0, even though my first and only shiny new SOHC4 was a 1975 F0 that I bought as "New Old Stock" for cheap in 1978, because the dealers couldn't shift them, and the F2's were out, and selling slightly better than their predecessors.
My first F2 that I bought in the mid 1990's was a magic bike, it was a one owner bike that while a little faded, came up well with a coat of Armor all after a wash, and apart from a diabolically annoying habit of breaking down whenever moisture came anywhere near it, it was a beautiful thing. I knew the problem was ignition related so I bought a complete new Dyna III ignition and Dyna coils and leads from Mike Beltrami, a member here back in the Greenspun days, and it ran perfectly, until it got wet. I never sorted it out, and by the time I'd bought a couple more CB750's from Spotty, plus a Suzuki GS1000 and a BMW R100RS, I sold it on "Sold.com" (Ebay Oz's predecessor) and the guy I sold it to in Sydney, told me that it drove him mad until he replaced the ignition switch, and all was good.
My next F2 was a nightmare. 450 bucks on Ebay, it looked really bad in the pics, and was much worse in the flesh. I remember dropping the oil, and something akin to cafe latte ran out. On top of that it had been in a fire so the wiring harness was melted, as was the airbox, the tank was rusted out, the seat base was more melted foam than steel, the head was fcuked with at least one valve guide protruding into the combustion chamber, valves with mushroomed valve stems, rotten brake lines, cracked tyres, broken sidecovers, you name it, it was just buggared.
Mark Paris (Hondaman) and Mike Rieck helped me out with some much needed missing parts, and I eventually converted it to take a K6 head and cylinder block, with a better set of carbs and a good starter motor, 3 different tanks (another member here from Texas, Tim Kasper, now living in Oz, finally sent me a really good rust free F3 tank) and of course Ebay and various swap meets, and I had it looking nice, and going just as well. I was hoping to find a "before" pic, but anyway, it looked pretty good by the time I finished it, apart from that wrinkle in the seat cover, that was installed by a "professional". I should have done it myself......
Of course, being the d1ck that I so obviously am, I sold it, 11 years ago. No biggie, I had lots of bikes, and back then it wasn't worth that much anyway, I think I got a shade over $3K AUD ($2K USD) so I may just have broken even, if you didn't count all the hours that I put into the thing.
Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago, and I'm trolling thru Facebook, and see an F2 for sale from a fairly well known bike importer, in "as rough as guts" condition, for $2500 AUD, in Coff Harbor, 1000 miles away.

I took a look and was impressed that most of it was there, but was up to my elbows in Kz1000/1428 and Z1-B builds, so ignored it. Last week I spotted it again, for $1999. Hmmmnnnn, On Wednesday evening I messaged him and offered him $2K including delivery to Melbourne, and thought no more about it. Next morning I had a message from him, saying he'd accepted. Woohoo! Of course the engine is locked up as it's been sitting in a carport for the last 10 years, unregistered, and unloved. Apart from the exhaust and the airbox missing, he told me that he'd sold the horns and the crashbars.
No biggie, Cliff (Maduncle here) Cafe'd an F2 years ago, and gave me a box of the bits he didn't need, which included the horns, airbox, sidecovers, headlight, tail light, grab bar, blinkers, chainguard, rear fender, tank badges, electrical gubbins etc. I bought a chrome 4 into 1 off a DOHC CB750 years ago wondering if it'd fit an SOHC4, so I'm hoping I can make it fit this bike. If so, it won't need much to make complete, even if it'll be a complete rat. With all the dough I've spent recently (another $1200 this week) on Z1 parts, this Honda will have to be a low budget build...... Anyway, surprisingly, the bike was delivered at 5 pm yesterday, only 4 days after I paid for it, which is ironic considering it took 3 weeks for a chunk of aluminium to move 20 miles across Melbourne via Australia Post. I was just able to squeeze it into my garage.....

My first concern today was if I was able to "unstick" the engine. Now providing it wasn't heat seized, there's a chance that I can free up the pistons in the bores with the right "Juice", so I made up a batch of the time honored 50/50 mix of ATF and Acetone, and pulling the spark plugs, I poured a cup full of the magic juice down each plughole, and into each of the inlet ports.

I had a bit left over, so I filled a spray bottle and sprayed it over every fastener, hoping that if need be, I'll be able to get them out reasonably easy.

One noticeable absence, was a tacho.

Once again, I ratted through my bins of parts, and found one that will do the job, and installed it.

And that's about as far as I got,I'll leave the magic potion in it for a few days before I try to budge those pistons, which is no problem anyway, because I have a Z1 to build, and a 1428 to finish. (not to mention the Harley ironhead Sporty, Yamaha XS650, Honda SP1, BMW K100RS, Spotty's K7, My K2, the BSA C11G, etc etc.
One thing that is very interesting with this bike though, is that I think that it may in fact be my first F2 that I sold back in the late 90's. Not just a "maybe", more a "probably". Interesting............
