Fuel Tank Door
« on: August 27, 2020, 04:18:54 PM »
My 750 K8 has a door over the fuel tank filler cap.  A key opens the door.  When the bike came to me, it came to me with the tank and the door, but they are not attached.  Two fasteners are needed.  They will need to be fairly small and short in order to fit.  I do not know what the stock fasteners look like.  If they are a regular nut and bolt, then it will be quite challenging to get a tool onto the bolt head or nut which sits under the bracket welded to the tank.  Where can I find the fasteners I need for this and what skinny tool would I use to hold the (I expect) nut under the bracket welded to the tank?

My broader question is this:  Where can I find diagrams and part numbers for all the parts on this bike.  I am a car guy with a special interest vintage car which is renowned and popular.  There is a HUGE document showing EVERY part on this car, with full blow-up diagrams and part numbers.  Is there such a thing for these bikes?

Rosinante,
Try using partzilla.com as one example of an online parts description with visual breakdowns of the parts and price/availability.

The K8 tank in stock trim has two mounting studs for the door hinge and the door is held in place with two nuts at the hinge.

Here is the parts fiche...book mark it.

And specifically the tank...

Like Wilbur stated, held on with two flange nuts and they show to be available.

BTW - any key will open that fuel door lock. Or screwdriver!

1978 Porsche 911SC.  The engine, suspension and brakes have been breathed-on a bit, if you know what I mean.  Nothing full-race, just street/sport.  You might be stunned to experience how much fun it is to drive this car.  Think:  Go-cart coupe with license plates.

I really appreciate the links and other information.  You guys are great.  Here are some pics of the door and tank bracket showing the absence of studs where, apparently, studs should be.  The piece in my hand matches the hole dimensions, but is otherwise just curious.  If I found the right pair of screws, I could make it work.  The holes in the bracket, where there should be studs, are small and would accept the right screws.  Ideally, they would be very small, short self-tapping screws.

Ah Hah!  The thing in my hand is Part 16 in the drawing, which likely causes the door to be gently spring-loaded.  I think I can get this door to attach and work as designed.

Yes, exactly.

My buddy has a '78 911, bought it last year at Mecum Houston [fun time!].
I've only driven it once, I think it needs to be "breathed-on"!!

It's a '70 model, never had an LT motor, that is an option that is hard to find.  It has a 350/300hp V8 that starts every time and runs great [and cool]

Not original paint, was painted by the PO, love the color and the quality of the paint.

I do too!  That car is gorgeous.

Thanks.  Convertible weather down here is coming, too effin hot now.

"LT motor?"  High performance?  As I recall, for a year or two near the mid-sixties, they put a ferocious engine in a very limited number of corvettes.  Something like 560 hp.  L66 or L88 or something.  My recollection is very hazy about that, but many of those cars would have been destroyed by now by collisions.

Yes of course I have pics.  This car makes a wimpy 205 lb/ft of torque.  On the other hand, it weighs less than 2500 lbs.  215 F and 245 R tires on 7x17 and 9x17 wheels.  22/28 torsion bars with Carrera sway bars and front brakes.  Struts and shocks are custom-valved Bilstein.  She's a dancer.  Cornering and braking can best be described as "violent."  She has that characteristic I like best in a performance vehicle....obedience.  ;)

Thanks to the help and advice I got here, the fuel filler door is installed.  I used a couple of screws I had lying around which were just slightly long enough to poke into the gas tank, so I used two washers and a split washer on each side.  There is enough room for those three washers and the screw head without interfering with the door.

For possible future reference, there is a clip which sits in a bracket on the tank and engages with the lock mechanism.  That clip was in a box which came with the bike.  The clip is bent.  Lengthwise.  It has a 'smile' or a 'frown,' depending on how it is oriented in its holding bracket.  The frown orientation left the front of the door riding too high.  The smile orientation forces the lock mechanism to travel further before engagement, but also allows the filler door to sit flush with the tank.
