A new triple?
« on: February 09, 2021, 04:02:47 PM »
I saw some pics on FB from cycle X, built by Kiyo?  There may be a new triple engine sohc4.

Wow Don, where did this spring up from, it looks like a clone of the AT&SF apart from not being fuel injected ?

That is almost certainly a Kiyo Garage build.  More show bike than anything.  Kiyo did some land speed runs on his double too. Notice the A/G 3000.  That’s salt flats speak for Altered chassis, gas fuel, 3000cc limit(largest allowed at Bonnville)

That bike is running all 3000cc into a factory trans.  That bike won’t be doing drag launches....

The last even double drag bikes using the factory rear engine trans was the 1972/3 RC series before Byron built the Lenco trans Vance and Hines double.  The RC build Bob Steakley double held 5 national records with the factory rear trans before the V&H monster took over.

Beautiful build. But that trans can maybe handle N/A gas land speed (gentle acceleration), but little more.  No nitro, staging with alcohol before launching on a 10” slick shenanigans

Very cool though.  The pipes are very Action Fours 2x4 esque

Old photo:  RC Engineering built Bob Steakley double engine dragbike at Bowling Green Kentucky 1973

It broke a national ET record in qualifying with Russ Sr at the helm at its first race event.  It was the best of the last of the breed using the factory rear trans.

Looks like a Goodyear Eagle 28 4.5 15 land speed tire on the rear and no front brakes.  All the details one would expect for a salt flats/El Mirage land speed runner.

Awesome..... go Kiyo

Kiyo is known for his show bikes. Lots of bling and intricate multi color candy paintwork(by Ca painting legend Bill. Carter).  And he also happens to like cb750s and has a shop in Gardena, Ca.  Same neighborhood as the old RC Engineering shop, ISkY cams, and so many other Hot Rod businesses.  El Mirage lake bed land speed racing is less than a 2 hour drive from Kiyo’s shop. That’s where he first tested the double.  Then he went to Bonneville.  Probably safe to say that he built a show bike and took it land speed racing rather than built  a full on land speed bike and tried to make it photogenic.

Probably the same plan for the new triple. FWIW, a Kawasaki multi engine holds the AMA 3000cc A-G (N/A, gas fuel, custom chassis, no fairings) record dating back to 1976 at 187mph.  That triple might be putting out up to 325 total RWHP or so N/A on race gas assuming he built some robust, but not totally exotic 997cc 71mm bore engines.

Mike, did you send Kiyo two sets of those beautiful CNC chopped cases for his build?  If not I’m sure he would have wanted to know about your work there.

Come on Pete, drag yours out and finish the job. My offer to do the engines still stands, you do everything else  ;D
Would be good noise therapy for you to go outside after a barney with the missus and start the beast up  8)

I noticed he runs the front oil pump off the maggy drive, haven't seen that before, all the twin engined bikes I seen front pump was run off the camshaft.  Also don't want to sound dumb but on Kenny's cycle X drag bike what does he use the two inspection covers fabbed up on ends of his tappet cover,  I assume they are to do with changing or adjust cams, anyone know ? I was hoping it was because he had to machine cam mounts and rocker positions to stand up his valve angle, but that's a lot of work.

cheers johno

Proprietary RC parts?  🤷‍♂️  Did you send the discarded silicon special case halves over to Kiyo?🤣

The mini sprint car guys ran their injection and oil pumps off the cam. I got into a shop full  of that stuff once when I couldn't afford to buy any of it. It was cool to look at, the guy even had a race ported big valve sandcast head. Every thread in it was helicoiled. I bought what I could regret not borrowing some $$ and loading a truck.

Beautiful piece of art work. Too bad he only mildly built the engines to 836 and did not take full advantage of the 3000cc class limit. However I doubt it will actually see the Salt. I do hope to see the bike there and meet this artist.

Don and George, copying is the ultimate form of flattery. (is that's the right word).
If this bike runs 7s, it's a good copy but I doubt it will get anywhere near it.
