Where to find 1978 750k needle jet sets?
« on: August 31, 2020, 04:52:29 AM »
Finally getting around to taking care of my fully rebuilt 1978 CB750K that has never started and run smoothly. the needles and seats/guides are a mishmash of OEM and aftermarket because I didn't understand how they worked when I rebuilt the carbs, and damaged some things while working on them. Now that I understand, I realize I need new matching sets.

So the question: Does it NEED to be OEM, or are there aftermarket kits that are worthwhile? And if it needs to be OEM, is there anywhere cheaper than the 32euro-a-pop CMSNL listing? It comes to an eye-watering $250-300 CAD. I'll spend it if I need to to get the damn thing going, but yowch!

Any ideas?

I'm all about OEM, but it's REAL hard to find specifically the ones for the 1978. Will the 1977 ones (listed at DSS there) fit the 1978?

I just ordered some for my 78. Jetsrus.com
They offer genuine Keihin as well as aftermarket. Got them in the mail a couple of days later and they appear good to me. Have the little k logo on them. We’ll see. First start in the next day or 2.

Cheers

Sorry, I just needed the jets. I missed the part where you were asking for the seats.

Maybe they know where/how you can get them: https://www.jetsrus.com/customer_service/customer_service.html

I don't think it NEEDS to be OEM. I've bought several kits off eBay over the years. In some kits, the brass seemed it could have been finished better and in others, the gaskets seemed a bit thin, but I've never had a problem. Still, if given the choice, I prefer OEM because I know what I'm getting...

I've had good luck with this kit: https://www.ebay.com/itm/4-X-Honda-High-Quality-Carburetor-Rebuild-Carb-Repair-Kit-CB-750-K-Four-1978/332407004455?hash=item4d65005d27%3Ag%3A1esAAOSwIylZ2-Wj&fits=Year%3A1978%7CModel%3ACB750K%7CMake%3AHonda.

I bought the CB550K version of that kit and the float needles were terrible quality.  Pissed gas everywhere, was really far out of spec.  Even when cleartube'd properly it still never ran quite right.  Was worth buying the OEM float needles.  Can't speak on their jet quality though, I did use the o-rings they seemed OK.  Still holding up a year later.

I have personally found in the past that no matter which way you go the needles and seats need to be all one brand either OEM or aftermarket.  The only small issue with aftermarket kits is that the needle may not have the exact same taper as stock but, so long as they are the same brand they should tune well.  And I will second what everyone says about float needles, nothing less than OEM for float needles.
