The Original Honda Superhawk!!!!!

I'm just showing off my CB77. Bill has asked for some photos on a thread and I've finally gotten to it. I got this bike 7.5 years ago for about $500. It barely ran and looked solid but not very pretty. It had been spraycan bombed and was kind of abused looking.
The frame is powder coated and the engine has been sandblasted. Words of wisdom: Don't sandblast an aluminum engine! Use a softer media.
Please feel free to ask any questions cuz I'd love to answer. ;D

I just grab the upper fork tubes and force the bike around corners. If I had the front brake working, I'd really have problems because I would totally lose control if braking and turning together. My wife likes what its done to tone up my arms. :D

Thank you. I am a bit of an amatuer photographer but I really put little effort into making these look cool. I would like to do some special photos of the bike this summer. I think it would be a beautiful subject.

       Hey CB, Thanks for posting those pictures. Always good to see an "Original Super Hawk". Now days I'll bet there are some who think of the one Honda has now (I guess they still build it, haven't kept up with that one much), when the name "Super Hawk" is mentioned. Hard to beat an old Super Hawk, in my opinion. My 63' is pretty rough, not to mention that the wrong motor is in it. It's got a CA77 Dream motor. Say, listen. why don't you let me keep that front fender for you ;D Mine is missing and they sure don't go cheap, do they ??? Take care and I'll catch you later on, Bill :) ;)

I have a CL175, 1968 model year if anybody wants it. It is one of my projects that is on the low end of the list. Last of the slopers and last of the rubber knee pads. All there except for a couple pieces of the exaust shells and the motor spins free. Looks correct and shows 4k miles on the clock.

The fenders are powder coated and are fairly straight. I think they would look great in chrome but this is original for my bike.
Part can be very expensive for these bikes but fortunately because it is collectible and there is a strong enthusiast market, it is possible to find just about whatever you need.
I do have some good parts Bill that I would give you a fair deal on if you want. Like new flat bars with a nice used orinial flat bar clutch cable. These cable are getting hard to come buy and expensive. It seems everyone wants the flat bars on there Superhawk. I kind of like the low-rise bars myself. I have a clubman bar that would look great but it would put the cable in a bad position.

The shocks are NOS Redwings. They sell for just over $100 if you can find'em. I saw some sell on eBay for a cb350 for about $130

         CB, I'll be talking to you about those parts. Seems like most parts for these, on ebay, are sky high. I do have a source on a possible motor deal and gas tank side panels w/ rubber knee pads. Main thing on the motor deal is trying to get a shipping cost that I can halfway deal with. The 66' CB72 that I had while in Japan, had bars like yours and were very comfortable. I tried a set of clip-ons and did not like them at all. I felt like I had no control because of the lack of leverage. I was considering the low bars, either like you have or maybe drag bars. Like I said I'll be getting in touch with you and see what you have that I might want and see what kind of a deal we can do. Thanks for the chance. 8) Also, I realized that I didn't say it before, but you DO have a nice bike there. If you ever need a place to keep it or if you need a Super Hawk Sitter, I'm your man. ;D ::)

Thanks!  The bike is all freshened up. Some parts have been rechromed. Luckily the tank was in good shape, just needed a nice paintjob. I need to get a new cover for the seat and maybe replace a couple of the cables, and a battery and I think she'll be ready to go.
Since the engine looks like it was sandblasted, I've been tryin to smooth out some of its surfaces with sandpaper. I decided sanding the edges of the fins would help. I thought of how its done on black engines, and it seems to have helped.

Those are not dunstals. I got the first one from JCWhitney. I ordered a pair of mufflers and recieved one of these and one of those. I mixed pair. I liked these better so I wanted to return one of those for another of these and they said that they don't carry these. So I went sourcing and ordered one from a Nickels catalog. It was about $65 and it looks sweet.

Here are some pics showing some interesting features of the Super Hawk. Notice the engine is integral to the frame, moving the engine far forward. And you'll notice the novel tach speedo setup and the kickstart swing Forward! :o

       Hey CB,
              The Super Hawk and the Hawk, sure changed my way of thinking about bikes. At one time, in my life, I wouldn't have even thought about a bike that didn't have a "complete" frame. Then I rode a buddy's Super Hawk and I was in love. 8) ;) One ride changed my mind right away. I wasn't too much on the speedo/tach combination and, when I bought my CB72 Hawk, I changed to the CB350 setup (which had just been introduced). As for the forward kicker, it took some getting used to but, that wasn't a problem either. Besides, my electric starter worked like a charm. I had to get used to the shift being one down and 3 up, because I'd never had one set up that way. Then I moved the footpegs to the passenger position, put a modified shifter on facing the rear and, once again, I had the old one up and 3 down pattern. Thanks for posting your Super Hawk. Your Super Hawk has inspired me to try harder to get my Super Hawk up and running.

15-20 years ago if you said "Vintage Collectable Japanese Motorcycle" people would look around and wonder who let this moron in the door. The CB72 and CB77, and dare I say "Some Old Timers?" helped save all our 350s, 750s, etc from total extinction. Looks like you have a nice example.

I've seen those mufflers being sold in eBay by siriusconinc. Was considering buying a set for my CB350 but the shipping to Spain was high, and I finally found a set of used originals in good shape from Germany.

'65 was the last year the needles swung opposite. Kick lever had to be redirected to miss the rearset peg design--Dreams and Scramblers are normal.

I thought this was a 67'. I think that is what the title states , and by the serial number 67 also. I'll have to recheck. I know the seat was not original to this bike, but the tack and kick surely are.

I believe the year of manufacture is coded on the wiring harness, but can't tell where to find out how. Many times, bikes would be leftovers and titled later than they were made. However, I'd believe yours has had a speedo transplant, since there are so many other non-stock parts.
There are places on the web to look up sthis stuff. You may know about this one:  http://www.honda305.com/ I have a '65. I see from the speedo page that "I" have an earlier unit than '65! Next time I get to the bke, I'll have to check the wiring...

Thank you. I do have a resto guide and I think the vin is of a later model superhawk. I didn't know about the speedo change. I've just learned of a change in the tank at some point Honda decided they didn't need the ballance feed from the right side into the petcock. Mine has the feed.
Bad news. My petcock is cracked. I was so fustrated trying to get it to seal  up. There was a crack between the threads.

The petcock had a split collar so I ground it down to where the split was and it seems to seal up pretty well. There arent as many threads as I'd prefer but what the heck...It runs!!!!! I was so excited to hear it run. I kick it over for a good couple hours with a dead battery and it ran for a total of 2 minutes. My leg is sooo tired. I guess I'll have to check to idle jets and try it with the new battery when it arrives later this week. ;D

       Too bad about the petcock trouble but, at least you've got the leak stopped. Maybe you can pickup a better one later on. Yeah, I know that hearing that baby run would be a real cool thing. I'm hoping that I can get that same feeling later this summer or maybe by summer's end. I've heard the differences on the speedo/tach deal and I can't keep them straight in my head. I don't remember how they were (exactly) on my 66' CB72, I swapped in the new CB350 gauges on itYou keep up the good work CB. Watch that leg, that's just a bit weird kicking towards the front and down, huh?
