Topic: unleaded fuel

Do the 750A's run ok on unleaded, i have a 1978 model.the owners manual says non lead gasoline is not recomended. I live in the UK and the bike is not registered here yet , i have only had it running in the shed. Any thoughts would be good.

Can't you get a hold of the additive that comes in a small container that you put in with the unleaded fuel when you fill up. I use it for my older bikes.

I have that additive that is added to the fuel, I just wanted to know how people get on using unleaded fuel . for example , do their exhaust down pipes go blue, ( very unusual for a honda ) indicating running too hot.

All Honda bikes, as standard since 1972, run on unleaded fuel 95 octan RON!

The valve guides in the 750A (and all these bikes) are cast iron. This wears with the lack of lead in the fuel. To counter it, use 1-2 ounces of oil in each tank of gas. If you can find the synthetic type of 2-stroke oil for this, it will not smoke, either (that's what I've used for a LONG time). This will extend the life of the valve guides for nearly original life. If you go into the engine, get bronze guides installed to solve this problem, it works fine.

That only works for the intake valve. The exhaust valves rely entirely on lube in the exhaust gases (which used to be hot lead) and the 2-stroke oils do not fully burn when used in these engines. In some places you can get "upper cylinder lubricant" (aka 'top oil') that goes into the gas, but in the USA this was banned by the liberals in 2002. So, we use real oil instead.

Old thread, but are you referring to the Lucas Upper Cylinder Lubricant?  You can still buy that in the US.

If you're referring to Marvel Mystery Oil: that is a highly-detergent oil used to remove deposits on valve faces and piston crowns in a hot engine. It works well for that, but doesn't lube the valve stems very well when running.

Just add a little 'normal' or 2-stroke oil to the fuel in the tank: that works well. Modern 2-stroke oil doesn't smoke much, either.
