Need Header Help
« on: September 25, 2020, 12:26:56 PM »
I was going to change out the ratty Mac drag pipes on my CB750 chopper but have ran into a supply problem.  My motor has the spigot style header mounts with the compression flanges, used up to 1976.  The only replacement headers made by Mac I can find are for the 1977 on models with stud mounted half circle style mounts that bolt on.  Here is my question, if I remove the spigots can I install exhaust studs in the same holes the spigot mounts were screwed into and use the newer style (77on) drag pipes that are still available from the one and only vendor I can find.  Any input would be greatly appreciated.  I don't want to order a set of pipes that will have to be returned. I have checked and the half circle clips, stud style flanges, and studs are pretty reasonable on Ebay if I can adapt them.

Yes, but try to get real studs.Easier to install, Honda ones may be sort of reasonable. .
Just stay away from Reddi Rod, due to loose fit, I think you are asking for trouble.. same with bolts.
A stud installed has less going in and out of head.,   except pulling motor I take a few out.

Studs or hex head bolts of the right length

Britman..... spend some time and find the correct studs. In my other experience, repeatedly screwing bolts/ cap screws in and out wears the threads in the head and sooner or later one gets crossed. I set in studs with blue loctite and forget about them.....
