You need to put the repainted tank on for some beauty shots for Bike of the Month. You can take it off for your rides...

She's gorgeous. I think I would paint another tank if you don't wish to risk the K0 tank...

Terry:

To no one's surprise, your bike has been nominated and seconded for Bike of the Month.  Please post that you accept the nomination in the following thread: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,180400.0.html

I think that you are singlehandedly doing more to restoring CB750 motorcycles in Oz than all of your countryfolk.

Thanks guys, I really did appreciate your nominations, but I had to refuse to accept because, well, it's just too early. The bike is complete and a runner, but will need some new parts I'm waiting on to make it pretty, and a little tinkering before I can honestly put my hand on my heart and say 'Yep, it's right to go".

As an example, today I scratched my head so much, I'm sure some of my hair fell out. I thought I'd check the alternator output to make sure that my battery doesn't go flat on my first ride. Good thing I did too, as the volt meter flat-lined at 12 V regardless of how many RPM's I was feeding it. OK, so easy things first, I replaced the regulator. (No Dice) Next I replaced the rectifier. (Nada) OK, I knew I'd have to d this, I pulled off the alternator cover and loosened all the screws on the transmission cover, and pulled the stator.

K0 Wednesday 9 Dec 2020 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

I bolted it all back together, reconnected all the wires, hit the button, hooked up the volt meter, and......... No Bueno. Fcuk. OK, I've never had to replace one, but I had no choice, so I removed the covers again, removed the stator, and this time removed the field coil. I reinstalled everything, but to be honest was pretty pessimistic as I've never had a bad one, but once I bolted everything back together and reconnected the wires, I fired it up, and bugger me, suddenly it was pumping out near on 14 volts! Oh well, "Ours is not to reason why", the old coil looked perfect, but obviously something is broken under the epoxy coating, because now it's pumping out the volts.

The is a piss off, but I've built so many CB750's (5 in the last 3 years) I should be used to everything. Oh well, there you go, typical initial teething problems with a brand bew engine. I almost went for a ride this afternoon but changed my mind, and I think tomorrow i'll adjust the clutch again and call it good. Wish me luck! ;D

Good catch on the field coil. I didn't realize you could just loosen the trans cover to gain enough access, thanks.

The charging wire go through a tunnel to the area under sprocket cover where the  plug into a short harness.
Should be able to pull them out , with trans cover in place.
To feed them back through , it any be easier if you use string and a bit of tape around the wires....

About charging....
Mod to ensure no problems if battery ground to engine (starter) is not good.

I got an old rectifier where the green wire connector had melted the connector housing and wire insulation. Found that many old ones for sale look the same.
Found Hondaman's post about why with recommendation to add an extra ground wire from the rectifier center bolt to frame.
I connected a thick wire direct to battery.

Thanks guys, yep, you don't need to remove the tranny cover (or the shift lever) completely, but loosening off the screws 1/4" and pulling the cover out that much will allow the wires to be pushed through and around the starter motor cable without tweezers, knitting needles, crochet hooks etc. And by just moving it out that much you won't pull the gasket off the dowel pin/s, so it'll stay in place, and not cause further grief. Of course, if you've glued your gaskets in place, well, that's a whole 'nother ball game..... ;D

Well I woke up this morning (which is a great start for just about any blues song ever written) and I couldn't stand up straight. I could touch my toes fine, just couldn't straighten up. Fcuk it, I took a couple of Tramadol and made a breakfast of potato (from my own garden) pancake, egg, bacon and baked beans. A delicious, and quite musical meal.

K0 Thursday 10 Dec 2020 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

Now the work end of year function was scheduled for 12.30 and I'd planned to give my poor neglected Harley Sportster a wash and ride it into the city for the function, but that went by the wayside and I sent my apologies. I need to get some more steroid injections into my spine, the last lot worked great for 6 months, and it's only started to piss me off again since September, but as I'm a chicken, and the injections hurt like hell, I've been using Covid-19 as an excuse to stay away from the medical centre, but I better do it soon, as my 92 year old mum gets around quicker than I do.

By around 1pm though, I'd taken yet still more Tramadol plus Panadol Osteo and an anti-inflammatory, and I was feeling much better. OK, no-one was at work, it was sunny (but not warm) so I thought I might ride the K0 to the gas station and fill it up with 98 RON fuel. The ride over was unevenful, so on the way back decided to detour the ten miles to Ace Motorcycles and see if Jeff would do a roadworthy inspection for me?

Jeff always greets me like his long lost little brother, and he was sitting in his office yacking to Harvey, his old mate. Harvey was a cop for many years, before he was pensioned off when he contracted Leukemia. Harv is a sociopath, who doesn't like people at all, but enjoys gold detecting around some ancient Chinese vertical mineshafts in Central Victoria. I asked Jeff once why Harv was always going gold detecting, and Jeff told me that Harv was actually visiting some baddies that he'd dropped down those mineshafts back in the day, which made perfect sense to me. Luckily for me, Harvey told me that he liked me, but if he ever invites me to go gold detecting with him, I think I'll pass..........

Jeff did the roadworthy inspection, and the old red beast flew through with flying colours. As it was still early afternoon and sunny, I thought I'd knock up a few miles on the old K0, so headed off towards the  "Western Ring Road" onto the Hume Freeway, and @ 70 MPH, the bike was just having a ball. Seriously, those CB77 pistons with new rings must really be as good as the old drag racer who sold them to me all those years ago said they were, this engine is really peppy, and loves to rev! I turned off the freeway at Wallan, and rode the back roads to Romsey, a little town in the middle of nowhere. I stopped to take a pic beside some Christmas decorations, but my fingers were so numb from the cold that my iPhone's camera's heat sensitive buttons didn't want to work. I did get one pic  though.

K0 Thursday 10 Dec 2020 1 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

I took off again, on to Lancefield, then turned right to ride to Kilmore, the intent being to do a big square basically. I stopped again a few miles down the road to take some better pics.

K0 Thursday 10 Dec 2020 6 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

I jumped back on, and took off for home. The bike was in it's element, the Delkevic pipe sounds louder than the one on the F2, and the engine really feels angry, it just loves to rev, but I didn't take it much over 5K RPM's, being it's first ride and all.

I had a close encounter with a stupid bidtch at a gas station on the way home. I'd done a little over 100 miles so thought it a good idea to fill up in anticipation of my next ride. I pulled up to a pump, switched the bike off, put it on it's centre stand and pulled out the pump to start filling the tank. A ladies voice came over the PA, saying something about the pump? I'm a bit deaf, the VA bought me some hearing aids last year, but they annoy me so I rarely use them, so I took the bike off the stand, and rolled it over to another pump, went thru the same ritual, only to partially hear the lady say something about the pump again?

Fcuk this, I walked over to the shop and asked the lady what she'd said, and she said, "I asked you to take your helmet off." Now, to put this in perspective, she was wearing a mask, customers were coming and going with masks on, but because I was wearing an open face helmet that allows the security cameras to easily identify me, I had to take my helmet off, when folks wearing masks that covered the greater portion of their faces, were allowed to buy fuel, without restriction? That was just dumb. Anyway, she was very apologetic, said that was the rules, blah blah blah, but I wasn't convinced. Stupid is, what stupid does.

By now traffic was building, as with no new covid cases in the last 30-odd days, life here in Melbourne is returning to normal. I scooted in and around the traffic on the old beast, and while pulled up beside a car at a set of lights, a guy around my age rolled down his window and said "Beautiful bike mate, I had one just like it" which made me feel pretty good. I arrived home and had to take a couple of pics of it with the F2 as I realised that I now have the first model CB750, as well as the last.

K0 Thursday 10 Dec 2020 9 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

K0 Thursday 10 Dec 2020 9a by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

As you can see, I like Stinko tyres and Delkevic pipes, both excellent, but underrated products. I ended up doing 111 miles today, so I can go over the the "20 rides in 2020" thread, and put another notch in my lipstick case, (with apologies to Pat Benetar) I think this is #17 or 18? So a day of firsts, my first ride on this bike, my first fillup, and my first trouble free first ride after a ground up resto.

K0 Thursday 10 Dec 2020 9b by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

Ooher, and when I got home I was a little nonplussed. You see, my daily routine for the last two months, pretty much every day has been: Work until knockoff time, (or on the weekends, I'd get straight into it, or maybe after a ride on the F2) so without any real work needed on the K0 now, I looked at the bitsa and decided that tomorrow with be "Heart Transplant" day, so as soon as I can knock off work I'll head out to the garage and see how long it'll take to pull one engine out, and install the other. I bought another jug of Penrite semi-synthetic bike oil yesterday, and I have a new oil filter for it, so hopefully I'll be riding the old Bitsa by Sunday. It'll be nice to have 3 very different CB750's to ride. The first, the last, and one sort of in between......... ;D

excellent work there, it was indeed a nice day for a ride

i was in wallan and kilmore today too, though i was in the toyota space shuttle so i don't think i had quite the same experience you did

being out and about on the roads every day now i get to see many odd things and whilst most off them are fcukwits that shouldn't have a pen licence never mind a bloody car one, i have seen a chap out on an immaculate K0 a couple of times, a nice shiny blue one, lots of harleys withuncomfortable looking handlebars and a couple of million horrible 50cc scooters doijng their duty as delivery vehicles.
the other thing i get to see, as i'm delivering mostly to panel shops is all the project cars tucked down the back of the workshops, lots of GTHO type falcons, big 60s fords, nasty old Holdens etc but probably the mosy exotic is the James Dean Porsche hardtop hiding away on a hoist in Bundoora, oh yeah and the Lambo Aventador that i very kindly offered to take out to blow the dust off for the owner
i blame Terry

Ha ha, I'd pay money to watch you trying to get in and out of that Lambo Spotty, I watched Jeremy Clarkson make a dick of himself doing just that, and you're about 6 inches taller than him? The blue K0 might be Steve's, he's a member here but I haven't seen him in years, he owns several K0's including at least one sandcast, which I think he bought new? He lives in Wallan, and must be retired by now as he's a few years older than me, obviously. (I was 9 when the sandcast was released)

And yep, there must be tons of cool cars and bikes gathering dust in various garages all over Oz, my dad's old minty XF wagon with 115K and never parked in the rain is still sitting in the garage with the battery charger I connected 5 years ago awaits my attention, but as I have nowhere to park it here, it'll stay there until Mum falls off the perch, and I need to sell her house. I really need 5 acres and a really big shed........ ;D

Congratulation for your first official legal ride, Terry!!

Not really...  ;)

Hey hey hey, enough of that kind of talk Trevor, the club permit is for a red CB750, so while the engine number might be different, and it might be a 1970 model and not a 1972 model, it's close enough! (not) But I will get a club permit for the K0 (and the F2) because the K0 is currently insured for $20K but as it was a project when I insured it, with no "Road Usage" cover, if I drop the K0 they won't cover me for sh1t......... ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Uh, better get thst thing legal then, is it worth more than 20k? Maybe have it appraised after final sorting and putting the newly painted tank on it for the appraisal.

Thanks David, they gave me $20K “laid up” insurance while it was just a pile of parts, but said that they’d happily insure it for $30K (at no extra cost to me) once finished. I’ll give them a call once I get my “Club Permit” and increase it, Shannons are fantastic, they don’t need pics, they’ll just accept my word, but of course if I crash it they’ll send their assessor out to check it, before they return it to me to rebuild. ;D
