I seem to find find the barn bikes with the 70's gummy enamel paint. You nearly have to scrape it off and there's always bondo where the emblems go. One guy did that, then tried to find the holes with a drill bit, drilled the tank and bondo'd over the hole. The paint had bubbled off and the bondo underneath was black.  I managed to tig braze the pinhole and it's nice now.

Yeah, I've got a wrinkle tank I need to list on Ebay Don, a PO (not the guy I bought it from) bondo'd over the tank badge holes and I think (but not sure, I need to go back and check) dented the badge area in a tad. The things some folks do.......... ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I'm not big on "Over Restored" bikes Per, I like them as they came out of the factory, warts and all. I actually prefer original "survivors" to restored bikes, but over here there's no hope of finding one sitting in a barn unmolested like in the US, so most need to be restored. As long as the bike is ridden, and not just trailered to shows, then that's fine with me.

Melbourne is in lockdown (again....) until Thursday, so I couldn't take the K0 for it's pie run on Saturday. I think I'll take Thursday or Friday off work and take it for a ride, I'm hanging out for a pie! ;D

Can you get your wife to make you one Terry ?

Thanks Bill, I've got some frozen pies in my freezer, but they're not as nice as the ones at the Heathcote Bakery. I think the pie isn't as important as the ride, just the treat I enjoy at the ride's halfway mark. I'm baking a loaf of bread as I type this, so looking forward to a nice sandwich and a Ginger Joe in a couple of hours time. ;D

Sounds good Man  :)  Yeah, 'The Ride' is the Best part.
Back in the days when we were younger, I'm sure our girlfriends happily prepared something to eat after a good long ride!!! ;D ;D

Yeah mate, but unless you’re from South Australia (the Barossa Valley is where the good wine comes from, I’m told) only immigrants, women and homo’s (not that there’s anything wrong with that) drink wine here. ;D

I can understand that during a hot summer when I very seldom drink wine, cold beers yes.

Cheap cold red wine mixed with 7-up raise a warning flag, right?
Not a typical Biker choice ;)
Can work fine after some beers a hot day.
White wines from New Zeeland taste good too.

Terry
I cleared the bondo out of the area where the emblems go on a 750 tank.
Light flame from a propane torch turns bondo into powder.
That would increase the value of that tank.

Terry..... Picked up a jug of phosphoric acid at my local farm supply today. "Super Dicoloid-Pipeline Aciid Cleaner". Apparently dairy farmers use it 100:1 for cleaning milking equipment. You suggested 10:1 for rust removal on rims etc. Do you use the same ratio for cleaning out a fuel tanK? How long do you typically leave it in? Thanks! John D.

G’day John, yep it’ll clean it out perfectly. If there is any fuel varnish inside the tank use a strong degreaser first (the one that came with my tank liner kit had to be mixed with boiling water, but worked really well) then dry it with a heat gun/hair dryer before filling it with phosphoric acid at around 10:1 water/acid ratio.

Try not to spill any on the tank, it won’t hurt it if you wash it off immediately, but might stain the paint if you leave it on. You can swish it around for an hour or so, drain it into a bucket and check to see how it’s looking, if not good enough, tip it back in again and keep swishing it around until you’re happy with it. When you’ve finished, tip it all into a sealed bucket or tub, and keep using it indefinitely. It’s great for fenders, headers, entire exhaust systems, etc etc. if it’s chrome, and not flaking off, it’ll make it look great.

Make sure you rinse everything with clean water or else you’ll have a cloudy layer of phosphorus over it. In the case of rims and pipes with slight pitting, a nylon or stainless steel scouring pad soaked in the PA will get all the crap off. If you can find my Redneck K2 Bitsa thread from 2017 or my Swamp Rat K2 build from 2019 you’ll see some before and after pics. ;D

I haven't seen your nice tank yet and I'm already envious John, here's the one I'll be repairing/painting for my K1. To quote Simon and Garfunkel, " "I am just a poor boy........"

Geez what US with the front of that 73, 74 tank.. it looks like it got  a big hit if compressed air..? Check the mounts and check for flat across the bottom part.

Yes Frank, good eyes, not compressed air, the opposite in fact, it's been squeezed in, possibly fallen on it's side while on the bike, but most likely has been sitting on a shelf on it's side with something heavy sitting on top. The fuel petcock is pushed in at an angle, and the "saddle" is so narrow that I can't sit it on my stand with the rubber front mounts in place.

Luckily I have a gas torch and plenty of patience. The good news was the $76 USD I paid for it wouldn't have covered the nice locking cap and petcock, not even for chinese knockoffs. The tank will live again, it's not much worse than my K0 tank was before I repaired it. ;D

G’day John, I’ve got the 4 K0 rebuild kits (loose, in a bag after I removed the top seals) so it might be better if you take all of them as I can’t guarantee that the needles and jets are the same size as yours? Add 50 bucks to the previous total mate, and I’ll put them in the box, along with a good used brass float. ;D

G’day David, yep, we had 5 here until my oldest boy moved back to Sydney a couple weeks ago, so now there’s our 3 cats, plus the big black one that’s adopted us. I have to keep an eye on Spotty as he’s taken a shine to him, and is threatening to cat nap him, not that he (“Mr Puss” as my wife refers to him, or “Midnight” as I call him) actually belongs to us, we just feed him snd give him the run of the place. ;D

If you can find my Redneck K2 Bitsa thread from 2017 or my Swamp Rat K2 build from 2019 you’ll see some before and after pics. ;D

Terry..... tossed a pile of rusty bits in a small batch at 10:1 yesterday. Nothing much appeared to happen. To my surprise, everything is spotless, 24 hours later! This choke lever looked like scrap! Bit of “Autosol” polish and it’s going back where it belongs. Thanks!
