OK, so Wednesday today, the day I venture from the safety of my comfy chair where I've been "working from home" to go to VA funded physiotherapy, which consists of "Magic Hands" Alice giving me a "Therapeutic massage". The bad news is that Alice has a new job and next week is my last session with her. Her replacement seems lovely, but I'll miss Alice, just the same.

I wandered tearfully across to "Supercheap Auto and picked up a jug of Penrite 15W-50 MC oil for the K0, as I decided that I'd cheer myself up with an oil change. I assembled all the necessary ingredients for motorcycle maintenance.

K0 Wednesday 3 Feb 2021 8 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

I cleaned as much of the crap out of my yellow drain pan so I could see if anything nasty came out with the oil.

K0 Wednesday 3 Feb 2021 6 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

I drained the oil tank first, followed by the pan, followed by the oil filter, and only spilt a little bit, which is pretty good for me.

K0 Wednesday 3 Feb 2021 7 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

The oil was a bit blacker than I expected after only 952 miles, but I guess I needed to keep in mind that while the cases were spotlessly clean, most of the internal components are 50 years old, and have been sitting in tubs and on shelves for several years before I built this engine, and  over those 952 miles, all the crap on them was washed off by that lovely hot Penrite oil. Anyhoo, I drained the oil back into an empty container so I could see what was lurking in the pan.

K0 Wednesday 3 Feb 2021 9 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

I couldn't see much of anything worth worrying about, I pulled the filter apart and didn't find anything, so I thinned the dregs in the pan with degreaser, and tipped it onto a piece of cardboard, and examined the tiny specs, and decided that all was good. (the white dots are the cardboard, not the oil debris)

K0 Wednesday 3 Feb 2021 9b by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

So, all good, and looking forward to another Heathcote pie run on Saturday. Sweet! ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I hope you'll get another squeezing lady making you happier!
Oil change the actual happy ending of your rides.

I guess you drink the veggies. Malt is one, right?
Burger or similar with tomatoes and onion not bad.

I love vegetarians as long as they are medium-rare!!! ;D

That's great news Terry.

I can't help but wonder if an engine assembled of used parts and (spotless) used cases is less likely to have any metal in its first oil change? Got that all out during their first lives?

I have that same blue funnel btw. Last used for exactly that.

Thanks guys, Vegetables? Well of course, Cows eat grass, grass is a vegetable, I eat cows, so of course I eat vegetables! But seriously, after my gastric bypass I can't eat a lot and my bariatric surgeon tells me that protein is more important than carbs or veggies, so a pie usually fills me up. Having said that after almost a year of "working from home" due to Covid-19, I've put a lot of weight back on (still 110 pounds lighter than before the surgery) so I better get some more veggies and less fats in my diet, with the exception of a Heathcote pie once a week.

I did pull the old filter apart, but the accordion style cardboard filter was a pain to pull apart and kept tearing, so no pics. Now as far as the oil goes, well, with tears streaming down my face and slightly blurring my vision at the imminent loss of the beautiful (27 years old) Alice, my "soon to be" ex-physio, I picked up the full mineral Penrite oil, but I meant to pick up another jug of semi-synthetic, like this one, that was still half full from my last oil change.

K0 Wednesday 3 Feb 2021 3 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

So I ended up using 2.4 litres of semi-synthetic and probably around 600 Mils of the Penrite dino oil yesterday. I figure it can't hurt, and I've got enough left to do another oil change in another 1000 miles. ;D

That oil has the right text on its bluish label.
Viscosity, zinc and semi synth.

Green one the previous Mineral, right?

Yep, everything is the same Per, except one is semi-synthetic, and the other is straight mineral oil. ;D

G’day Brian, I think Supercheap do sell a filter for our bikes, but I bought a 4 pack on Ebay when I bought the F2, and due to the sh1tbox engine in my K2, only had that one left. I better order some more, I’ve got a buyer for the K2 so I’ve promised I’ll fix the engine for him first. I’ve already wasted 7 litres of oil in that bike without doing more than 5 miles? And that pisses me off...... ;D

By the by, I took my first ride on the "A" on Wednesday evening.
Had couple of mates hold me up and knock it into 2nd for me and of I went. ;D
I got in about 5k but when I got back the bastards where sitting in the shed having a beer.
I spent ten minutes doing circles in the yard abusing them before they discided to come out and catch me.

I'm very happy with the way it runs. Smooth as and no major rattles that I can tell.

I'm ducking over to the " When is the last time you rode your SOHC" to update my previous post.
It's been over nine years since I've ridden a bike. ;D

Ha ha, that is fcuking gold Brian! I just read it aloud to my son Tim and we both pissed ourselves laughing! Anyway, congratulations mate, if you ever decide to come for a ride down my way, give me a call with an ETA so I can stand out the front and catch you! But seriously, well done, wow, what a bloody achievement for you, after 9 years, that's brilliant! Well done mate, I'm really happy for you! ;D

OK, so for those who don't know, Brian is a Paraplegic from breaking his back (for the second time) in a race bike crash in 2011(?) when his sidecar outfit slammed him into a concrete wall at maximum warp, and just smashed him. He died 3 times on the racetrack, and when I first met him (at Sammy Green's insistence) at the spinal unit of the Austin hospital in Heidelberg, I was amazed at his positive attitude. He greeted me like an old friend, and with half dozen hoses hanging out of him, still dominated the conversation.

If I had to name all of my mentors over the last 60 years, (and I've worked with many well respected war veterans during my 44 year military service) Brian would be up there with the guys who've shaped my soul over the years, Brian is a truly amazing man. If I had no feeling below the shoulders, I would have surely given up riding motorcycles many years ago, but Brian is truly an inspiration, and a man I'm proud to have as a friend. ;D

What about a trike build, Brian?
No need of parking, take off assistance.

I have thoughts about that when getting older with less stability. Not that many years ahead for me.
A 2 seater with luggage compartments for adventures and daily shopping. Not that wide tires.
Maybe the future for my 1000cc billet block engine ;)

Anyhoo, yesterday I fired up the ol' red beast and rode back to Heathcote for lunch. This summer has pissed me off a tad as it's been pretty cool, and it was a couple degrees cooler than I would have liked for most of the ride, and I'd wished that I'd worn a long sleeve top under my jacket rather than just a T Shirt. Only a minor b1tch though, apart from that, I had a great ride. I realised that the oil I'd dumped out of it was Castrol 4T, not Penrite, and I have to say, the Penrite feels better. The first thing I noticed is that the engine is mechanically quieter, and the clutch disengages better, so instead of the usual 1st gear "Clunk", it snicks into gear nicely.

I filled up with Shell 98 RON again and it definitely runs better on the higher octane fuel. One thing I've noticed as Covid-19 is pretty much not an issue here in Oz anymore and folks are returning to work, is that the price of fuel has risen back to pre-covid prices again, but what the heck, I average 140 miles per ride, and with 45 MPG economy, it's not much money for a lot of fun. The bike is happy to cruise at 70-80 MPH, so I maintained those speeds, only slowing for the fixed speed cameras on the 10 miles or so of freeway that I had to use to get back to my favourite back roads.

Apart from having to ride around a couple of piles of debris that had fallen off the back of someone's trailer (obviously they were moving house, looking at the remains of a coffee table and a chair in the middle of the road, 5 miles apart) the ride was uneventful, and I arrived at the bakery around 2pm, my favourite time, as by then it's pretty quiet and I always get a nice table inside. I took your advice and instead of having a meat pie, I had a meat and vegetable "Pastie" for a change, and it was very nice.

Oh, and while the red boots looked lovely, they aren't very comfortable for walking, so I ratted thru my wardrobe again and found a new pair of "Made in the USA" Redwing boots that my Dad bought me on one of his trips to the US back in the 80's or 90's. No idea why I've never worn them, they're very comfy, I think I'd just forgotten all about them? Anyway, I also found another pair of new lace up work boots and some Danner combat boots, my 33 year old "Johnny Reb's", some "RM Williams" boots, and another pair of Cowboy Boots Dad and Mum bought me in the US, plus some others. I actually threw some out as they were looking a tad shabby, but don't think I'll need to worry about not having enough bike boots for awhile........ ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Jeez Uncle Tez, don't load me up to much.

It's you, Uncle Sammy and all other blokes on this board that helped me struggle through those dark times in 2011/'12. The lovely Evelyn and I would have found the going a lot harder if it wasn't for the support we got from everybody. Anyhow that's enough looking back.

Just remember "I not the messiah, I'm just a very naughty boy".  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Brian and Per, no tikes! Remember I'm a sidecar man. I have a road going sidecar from the seventies that we will fit up once the bike is finished. And definitely no race motors, just me and my dog sedately cruising around the countryside. ;)

Cheers,
Brian

You guys are awesome. It's 6" deep in blowing snow and -0F here so the photo ride along with Terry was a pleasure and I loved Bears ride story more than I can tell.  If I won the lotto I'd load a 750 on a plane and show up down under for a ride.
