In the last few years I've been using disposable latex gloves when working on my bikes.  Apparently oil is toxic & long term exposure can cause cancer.  If so, I'm f*cked anyhow!  I use the gloves to keep my hands clean.

Ha ha, yeah, I've painted many cars and bikes without a respirator, used lots of chemicals in the army (one mozzie repellant we used to get issued would melt the plastic lens on our "Mickey Mouse" watches) I sprayed 245-T around the perimeter fences of the Farmers Store where I worked before joining the Army, I use a power sander for removing paint and bondo without a mask, I smoked for 40 years, etc etc.

I had a heart attack in 2014 (two years before my brother died of a heart attack) and didn't go to the hospital, (it showed up in an EKG in 2015) I've got lumps on both kidneys, my liver and my gallbladder, but nothing cancerous, they think. Oh well, I've always said I'm here for a good time, not a long time....... ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Latex gloves are fine.
Good when lifting drive chain off the sprockets and fiddling with carbs bowls/ mainjet.
Fuel stinks, take a while to clean off the hands.

Yep.  I always have to remind myself to put them on when I decide to lube a chain, as it inevitably turns into a wheel rim, wheel hub & spoke cleaning session!

G'Day Tom, thanks mate, no, the Kawasaki's both went on hold when the F2, then the K0 arrived, but I've promised myself I'll finish them this year. I've got to get my K2 bitsa going properly, build my "fake K0" rat and put a K2 together for a mate as a part trade for his old Harley Softail Heritage.

Clayton has been a great help, once I found out the "K0" frame was a bodged K1 frame, he sold me a good K2 frame to match my engine number (close enough) and that should arrive next week. On top of that I bought another K2 "Bargain" from up near Gladstone which should be being picked up tomorrow (flooding permitting) and that's the one I'll build for Dion. Once all that's out of the way, I need to put the Z1 and 1428cc Z1000 back together. Both engines are done, I have all the parts I need, I just need to drag the parts out and bolt them together.

I think my biggest problem is that CB750's are my "comfort zone", and I'm easily distracted. Oh well. ;D

Terry,do you have a twin brother who likes working on bikes as much as you do? You could possibly train him, then enlist him into service on all your projects  :D ;D
Then you could sit back with a few Ginger Joe's,dig around here and there and supply him with parts and watch the progress;you also might want to send him in to listen to your wife rather than always having it be you..

Thanks Bill, I only had one brother, but he died a month before his 59th birthday in 2016. He liked bikes, but had no mechanical skills, like everyone else in my family. I think I got my mechanical inquisitiveness (if that's a word) from my maternal grandfather, as he and all of his brothers were mechanics, masons, house builders etc, and my cousin is probably the best mechanic I've ever known.

My wife would be happy to have anyone to talk to, with a house full of males the conversations are usually short and sweet. ;D

Terry,
I want to know what modifications you did to the pistons/engine when you fitted the CB77 SuperHawk domed OEM pistons to the bike to make them run with no interference ?
I ask because I hope to have $$ sometime in my life and purchase a K0 of my own and I like that modification.

K7/K8 (392) pistons also a good upgrade in the earlier bikes.
My K2 got a cheap set from cruzinimage. +0.5mm. Engine like it. Start easier, all 4. Compression bumped into the better area.

Before like a Flying Fortress or Lancaster bomber at startup despite good stock shaped cruzinimage 61.0 pistons, good head.

Thanks Bill, I did absolutely nothing mate, just installed them, torqued the head down and cranked the engine over, listening for any noises that would indicate the pistons kissing the valves, but it was all good. If you installed a high lift cam it might have been a problem, but the K0 cam has just a tad more lift and duration than the K1-K6 cams, so nothing touches.

They certainly fill the combustion chambers though, the domes are much higher than even the Wiseco 836cc pistons I installed in the K2 Bitsa recently, so I'm gonna guess the compression ratio would be close to 12:1? Way taller than K7 or even F2 pistons.

Now one thing to think about though, is the CB77 has 60mm bores, so my 61mm pistons must have been "4th Oversize" to be 61mm. Luckily they had no wear at all, and I picked a good set of sleeves out of my sleeve collection, so they were a nice fit in the cylinders one I shrunk the sleeves back into the cylinder block. ;D

Yeah mate, I've got an industrial oven in my garage, so whenever I get a cylinder block, if it's got damaged fins I just heat the block to 200 deg C, stand the block in the bottom of the oven on the protruding sleeve bottoms, and once the casting gets hot enough, gravity takes over and the block slides down the sleeves and (with my welders gloves on) I can just lift the sleeves out. Gotta love iron sleeves! ;D

Terry, with those CB77 high-compression stock pistons,it's good that you have access to your nice blends of hi-octane gasoline.Do most of the fuel stations you get fuel from have Ethanol-Free gasoline in different octane grades ?

G'Day Bill, as far as I know, 91 (standard) gas has no ethanol, 95 has a fair bit, and 98 doesn't have as much, so I use 98 for all my high comp engines. ;D

Terry, your 'standard' grade there is 91 octane?  :o ;D ! I could only hope that we can do better here than 87 for standard/Regular,which of course is loaded with Ethanol.  :(

The methods of measuring octane are different, not apples and apples comparison. The US changed the method of measuring a few decades ago. So, octane requirement numbers in manual do not translate to 1:1 ...
Just like oil standards have morphed over time and you will not use a modern auto oil in your bike in the US because lots of the ingredients changed. The change in engine design and emissions causing these changes in the standard.
This is why adding zddp to so.e oils is beneficial, while others don't need it.
The introduction of roller rockers changed the needs for the lubrication in the motor. Our motors and old muscle car motors got left behind. No, high mileage oils don't cut it either...
Motorcycle specific oils often have the needed zinc, phosphorus, etc.
So Terry's gas may sound magical to your ears...
Different country and different standards...

The different ways to lable the gasoline.
https://www.etuners.gr/fuel/
Higher octane will not harm the engine, too low can. Different with newer cars with knocking sensors that adapt the fuel injection and ignition to the bad or good fuel.

Our old bikes have only us to supervise how engine like the fuel or not.  Bad idea to retard ignition before using higher octane and harvest the built-in power.

From the link above....

Europe vs the States

In Europe, gas stations describe different types of gasoline based on their RON rating. It is typical to have 100, 99, 98, 97 or 95 RON with prices varying accordingly. In the States the descriptions look a lot like RON, but they are not.

Pump gas

In the United States gas stations describe the types of gasoline based on the Pump Octane Number (PON). That number is the average between RON and MON. This causes many problems.

If a fuel is 98 RON then it will be 93 PON -> 93 PUMP
If a fuel is 95 RON and 87 MON then it will be 91 PON -> 91 PUMP

Yep, I googled it awhile ago and the US has a different grading system than "RON" that we use here, so apparently US 93 is the same as Oz's 98, but some of the RAAF (airforce) tech guys I worked with who were posted to the US said that the lower octane fuel there is garbage, but I don't know how true that is? Regardless, my Harley loves low octane fuel, and my high comp Honda's love 98 RON gas, and if I put the wrong fuel in either bike, they let me know. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)
