Very comfortable! No complaints at all. Good sitting position and soft seat. Keep in mind my other bike is a cafe racer with a thin seat and clipon bars, so maybe anything is more comfortable.

Ok so actually looks like I’m lean. It’s cold today but I might take it out for a spin. I’m also considering getting some better cold weather gear. Really just a good neck gaiter and gauntlet style gloves. I have Lee Park DeerTours and love them so I’m probably going to get the DeerSport PCI gloves too.

It's a drag when you think that riding weather is over. I, like you, decided that warmer outer ware could extend the season. I went with heavy liners for the armored jackets, couldn't stay warm. Then went with snowmobile pants and jacket...a little better but the lack of protection weighed heavy on my mind, especially with the amount of sand and salt that N.Y.S. dumps on the roads  anytime there may be snow or freezing rain. And even if you make it home safe, there's a big clean down that has to happen if you like your chrome or polished parts. For me , that just confirmed when the season is over, the season's over. Time spent in the garage rebuilding another machine can take some of the sting out ....with that in mind , what machine ya gonna build next?

Yeah, definitely makes me think back to the summer and how many riding days I missed because it was too hot or work got in the way or I just didn’t feel like going out. But what other project? Damn that’s a good question...I’m considering building a bobber but I’d love to find an old 30’s bike and fix that up. Like a scout or something. But I’m reality I’ll just get really good at drinking whiskey.

Yeah , I was thinking about an older machine once too. I had an old Royal Enfield  rider from N.J. who had parked his bike outside our local pizza parlor just before a raging downpour. I could hear him getting ready to ride back home once the rain had stopped so I came out to see how he was making out. He was kicking the hell out of that beautiful old O.D. green machine with orange pinstripes and there was no indication that it would pop until the electrics got dried out. I asked him if he would like to wheel that beauty into the theater just down the street where I could set him up with a hairdryer for the electrics mounted on frame under a light metal cover with no seal just behind the front tire ( stupid place for that stuff)  and he took me up on it. While it was drying out he told me how he had spent years rebuilding that machine and I asked him if it was the finding of old parts that was the issue. Much to my surprise his answer was" NO ,that the Royal Enfield  Club keeps meticulous records and know were all but 400 surviving machines are since production and that parts that are almost lost to time have been re manufactured by this club and stockpiled overseas so that Enfield owners all over the world are never without parts for any model year Enfield. Well about this time everything was all dried up and he was putting the cover plate back on said thank you and away he went . Gosh what a lovely machine...with most parts still available....simple to build, not too expensive to get in on, I wanted one in the worst way and if I ever find one that fits the bill I'm getting it. So far that hasn't happened, but given the chance , one would be following me home . That is always in the air that surrounds this mind but it's all in the timing.
Whiskey . Well , never  acquired a taste for that but Gin , wine , beer, Rum, and I have been known to have been good at drinking that but never on 2 wheels. What 30's bike  would be your fancy besides an Indian?

Not that there's a thing wrong with an Indian except the price and parts availability. According to American Pickers, early Indians are so rare that they would take a chance on hand digging someone's backyard up to find what' may be left of a machine that some crazy uncle buried 50 years ago. I mean, if it's like that, just what kind of chance does anybody have to acquire one of these machines to work on?  Hmmm, You haven't found one of these machines.....have you??

Haha, I definitely don’t have any leads on an old Indian. Would be nice to find some old lady with a shed and no idea what’s in it, though. That’s pretty much the only hope one has.

Next step is dealing with my gauges. They look great but speedometer isn’t accurate and wobbles a lot and tach isn’t accurate and seems to stop at 5,500rpms. I have taken them apart to bend the needles back down so they don’t hit the glass and I was going to clean and relube them and all that or send them out for repair (way too expensive) but I just bought the 750 gauges from 4into1. All specs are the same except they have dark green faces instead of black. My goal is to take these apart and make new faces to drop in. And also roll the odometer forward to reflect the old gauge while I’m in there.

I was looking as David silver spares, cyclexchange, etc. and they all seem to be the same aftermarket gauges. DSS sells them for $170 and 4into1 sells them for $135. Hope it works out!

Got the news gauges in from 4into1 and I’m impressed.

These are for a 750 but since they have the same ratios and the same redline I grabbed them. They should work fine.

Once I confirm they work well I want to take them apart as I said in my previous post and change the odometer. Also, since the faces are a bluish/greenish-gray I want to try and make new black faces to match the OEM 650 ones.

I might make a post on the general forum but anyone have any input on how to make new faces or decals?

If you are going to take them apart, can you just swap the faces? The pic with all of them together looks like the 650 faces are in good shape.

So the original gauges are in good shape. They don’t work right though. They are inaccurate, wobble and the tach stops around 5500 rpm. I had them apart before to try and fix them and it didn’t work. I haven’t put too much effort in them to be honest though.

I can’t swap the faces because the numbers aren’t the same spacing so the needle will be pointing to the wrong numbers. And it’s not as simple as adjusting the needle because the spacing of the numbers are different too so it can never be accurate.

I know, I wish it was! Actually I decided that I’m going to put more effort into fixing up the old gauges. I ordered new cables and I’ll go from there. If this works then I might be selling these 4into1 gauges for fairly cheap!

True. But that would cost over $500 probably more like $800 not including shipping. I found another one cheaper who’s in the states but still would be close to 400 and that doesn’t include any parts replacement.

Just replaced all o-rings in the oil pump. Hope this is the final leak.

Leaned the bike up against my work bench. Ignition cover resting against the leg.

Always the screws holding the oil pump on are stuck. And I always try an impact driver but that never works for them so I just drill into the heads with a left hand bit. It’s the head of the screw that gets seized to the aluminum, very rarely the threads themselves so they just spin out by hand once the heads break free.

A note about o-rings for the 650. I’ve spoken about this before in my 674cc build thread (link in my signature) but one of the o-rings Honda says you need is wrong. They say that #16 in the diagram is 42mm x 2mm but it’s actually 53mm x 3mm. Honda doesn’t offer that o-ring so you need to get one elsewhere. I use McMaster Carr and get part number: 9262K306. Another issue is that in the diagram Honda doesn’t say what o-ring size is needed between the pump body and the cover plate. (I highlighted it in red) THAT o-ring is actually 42mm x 2mm.

I have a bunch of o-rings so I’m happy to supply any member with all o-rings that are needed to rebuild a 650 oil pump. Just ask and I’ll send you them for $10. Also you could contact member Elan. He sells full kits with springs and such...BUT the kicker is that he only has kits for the 550 and 750. Doesn’t include all the proper sized o-rings. Doesn’t hurt to ask if if he can get them though.

Here’s the o-rings. Not pictured is the #18 o-ring for the pressure relief spring cover. I had replaced that earlier. The top are the old ones and the bottom are the new ones. Slap it all together and you’re right as rain.

Yeah I didn’t even check the rotors, oil pressure is fine so I’m not going to worry about it.
