Did they make gold wrinkle tanks for CB 750.
« on: October 14, 2020, 10:24:05 PM »
Gold was only offered after part number 19  ×××.  So the question is , we're any actually wrinkle tanks?
Not sure if there were several die sets for stamping the tanks or just one. Plus when the change came , did they just maybe use the newer stock for the new color ? I was just wondering.

I thought that the original K0 came in only 2.colors, red and green. But I could be wrong. Plus weren't the K0's the only ones to get wrinkle tanks.

Frank.... the early bikes were definitely two colours to start. I’m sure that one of the bikes I bought years ago was an early 1970 K0. From memory, it had a gold wrinkle tank.....

K0's came in Candy Gold. (Yamiya sell full replacement body sets for them in Candy Gold) . No idea if the gold had a wrinkle tank though. Not sure if we had the K0 in gold here in  the UK models though 🤔

As I had said first post, the part number for gold started at 19,xxx. It is in the parts books.
Now there will be earlier bikes that have a tank and body parts switch..

The last 69 CB750 is near CB750-1018015,  this is also near when wrinkle tanks ended.
So there would be 1000 bike gap between wrinkle tanks and gold bikes.

Was the original bike shown in England a gold bike?
One of the prototypes was gold.
Gold productions bikes arrived around January 1970.

For some reason Honda always did different colours for the UK like the 500 we could always get black but never the green

It appears there are bike with greater number than 18,015 and marked 12/69. I was thinking up to 19 or into the 20, 000 range, but I could he wrong. I have also heard of  bikes have wrinkle tanis, and lower number ones not having the wrinkle tank..
What muddied the water,  is if there are several assembly  lines, then the parts  get used up at different rates.. fwiw..

I have a wrinkle tank on a 1/70 build frame number 20293 engine 20200. Bike shows 6700 miles and has all the key original parts. Not gold though. Wonder if the tank was a switcheroo.

There we have it, definitely maybe. I think it would be impossible to prove there wasn't one.

Its a prototype bike , different paint . And the very early tanks had differences. It might be a production tank  or a protoype. Hard to say. That bike has parts on it that were not used on production bikes.

That is true, but it is not listed in the parts books , not ever built again.,  and likely different underneath,  and different petcock. . So yeah ,yeah one  off.

Part of the problem , beside maybe more than one assembly line is when parts ceased production.  When the did the head switch at 26,xxx they may have stopped making that variation, a month or more before parts got used up.
The gold tanks available at part # 19,xxx, but they had to be made before that.
But I am reasonably sure if you ordered a gold one, it would be stamped 19,xxx or higher number . And delivery before start of year 1970 may not have happened..

I know that there is loads of wrong info in parts book and so many parts books for different counties . I used to work for Honda in the 90's and you would never reveal a bike at a show in a colour that was not going to be for sale. The prototype in the UK was gold and gold was the most sold colour  ;)

I was digging through timelines and turned this thread back up. Years ago I was lucky enough to find a red sandcast I could afford, then finished my K0  in blue green and recently stumbled onto a late numbers poo brown K0. I have to own a gold one even if it's just long enough to take a picture of the three.  Anyway judging by the numbers the newer one is obviously the one that could have been gold. But I might not keep them in order. L0L.

It's funny, I got an answer to this question in a several month old thread about an early engine on cb750 sandcast and diecast. Right in the middle of something a thread about something else. I love it. Tom C. said they started gold at 19,210. He showed a tag from a gold one 20 or so bikes newer than that number.  1/70 build date so I'd say there were gold wrinkle tanks. Ekpent has an original wrinkle tank in the 20,000 era.  I can say without a doubt there are gold wrinkle tanks now and then.
