Late model supersport emmisions delete
« on: October 14, 2020, 02:33:49 PM »
As the title states I took the old catch can and releated hoses off my 78SS, not really sure how much good it actually did.  Any way I plumbed the rear engine port back to the oil tank and that seems all good.  I have put a filter on the fitting on the valve cover since that hose is now gone, thinking it would be a good option.  After todays ride I have realized that filter isn't gonna work out.

My question is can I run a hose from that valve cover port to the unused port on top of the airbox?  It should just recycle crankcase gases back for reburning right?  I don't think it should upset the carbs at all.

As always any information and opinions are appreciated.

That should work, assuming your engine doesn’t blow an inordinate amount of oil.....

The original canister helps separate the water vapor from the oil vapor and it helps reduce the volume of oil vapor routed back through the engine. I expect it would take a long time to see negative effects from moisture, and you should know soon whether the volume of oil collecting in the air cleaner is something you can live with. Worst case you can always reinstall the canister. The canister originally had a foam filter inside but I've never found more than a few crumbs in any I've ever opened up. I use a green air filter foam element from a lawn mower engine and cut to fit, about 2" diameter and 1" thick. Remove the plastic disk inside the canister, insert the foam, and snap the disk back in place under the lip about a third of the way down.

Good point about the moisture build up. Short rides can create a surprising amount! Check the bottom 1/2 of the air filter after a few weeks and see what builds up.......
