CBX then and now...
« on: December 04, 2020, 04:25:12 AM »
My missus was sorting through some old photos.  This is how my CBX looked in January 1990:

and how it looks now:

It has actually improved with age, unlike its owner...

Nice finding old pics like that.  Did you paint it the blue, that wasnt a stock color, right?

As much as I love blue, looks better in silver.

It was silver when I bought it. I had a plastic tarp over it on a stormy night, and it fell onto a metal pole, which put a huge crease in the tank. I decided to have it resprayed in blue. A few years later, I bought a NOS silver tank & front fender. Would you believe that Honda (or their supplier) painted the plastic fender with no primer?! The paint literally peeled off when I sprayed it with a garden hose! I also bought a NOS chainguard. Same deal. What I found odd was the shiny black plastic chainguard was painted with semi-gloss black paint. I ended up peeling off the paint by hand. Lot of memories when you own a bike for over 30 years...

Yeah, Honda has been stabbed by their vendors many times. One of those times was in the 1990s: they started the 'Genuine Honda Parts' initiative then, as copycats were making all sorts of inferior parts. We saw some of this with the infamous cam chain tensioners for the 750 in the early 2000 era, to about 2008 or so. Some of those parts are still out there. They come in bags with copycat Honda labels on them, look genuine enough that places like DSS, among others, think they have genuine parts. They aren't...lately Yamiya got stung with some supposedly NOS CB750 tanks: the fact that they had tanks of the 1974/5/6 design as (thought to be) NOS K1/2 tanks, which are obviously different to the practised eye(s), was one sign. Good quality tanks, but the bottom edge of the tank doesn't line up with the K1/2/3 seat line. They meet up with the K4/5/6 version OK.
