1973 CB350 Four Head Removal Question
« on: October 24, 2020, 12:19:39 PM »
Is it possible to remove the cylinder head while engine is still in the bike's frame?

I broke a spark plug off in cylinder #4 and can not get it out by any other means... I tried everything I could think of with no success.  Any suggestions as to how proceed are certainly welcome.

'Thanks'

Yes you can! At reinstall make sure all tapets are fully released or you strip the threats.

Thats the 1 tip i can give, carefull not to overtigjten the cover bolts. If the tapets are not released the cover will not allign with the head and thats when things go wrong.

Also carefull with the camchain tensioner. Do not overtighten the locknut or it might break.

Rem,

'Thanks' so much for your reply.  I am in the garage by myself and I did not want to have to take the engine out.

UPDATE:

I was able to get the spark plug out of the engine.  I first cut a slot, in the threads that remained in the engine, by using a small three sided file.  I then heated the surrounding surfaces and then used a four pointed extractor.  I made sure that one of the extractor's pointed sides was down in the slot.

I also used constant pressure with a breaker bar on the end of the extractor.

I hope this helps someone else with this problem.

No need to remove the head.

How did you make sure none of the filings ended up inside the engine?

I used a vacuum and a small telescopic magnet while I was filling.  I made sure that the piston was at top dead center while using the file.
