400f 1976 054 carbs project
« on: October 30, 2020, 03:37:10 PM »
found on this site, a set of carbs of unknown condition other than an external view half way around the world together with shipping was close to 300 US dollars. i asked if tilted back and forth could sound of the floats be heard moving. i wanted to see at least the inside of 1 carb, the seller pulled all 4 bowls for a picture, which revealed parts inside! some moderate corrosion, sealed the deal. i totally appreciate Claudio for responding by a request looking for carbs. half way around the world. nobody closer, had the time of day, that's one of the biggest reasons, that the big chance of getting a junk carb couldn't hold up to the slight chance of a genuinely honest 400f rider, offering the carbs. that was bad ass.

main fuel cross over was plugged with something for an end carb.
fuel inlet needle jets are all stuck severely so instead of pulling them out, fuel level was checked and was over flowing the overfull tubes. fuel was coming out of the vent tubes. instinctively as always, before finding out why, or what exactly was the problem, adjusted the floats (they came adjusted flatter than ever seen before.) and that worked great until the time it took to reach running out of each bowl. then looked inside of the needle jets and sure enough they looked corroded/eroded couldn't tell which. but 20 times of brasso on a q tips cleared most of it right at the needle seat. i did check the seal of the needle jets by plugging the jets w/out the needles in place and it passed pressure and vacuum test. readjusted the floats to almost where they were and got a level of 5mm from the top of the bowls. there was some creeping levels that brought it up to 2 or less mm from the top by the next day.

eyeballing the sync situation, it looks close enough for maybe good without having to adjust it. i cleaned the carbs in an assortment of fluids, 1st was 50:1 2 stroke gas corn unethylized-that had an immediate darkening effect, then everclear-only 120% which worked pretty well, overall it was just a gasoline bath, that earned the no. 1 spot.

removed 1 slide to get out the emulsion tubes and to pull 1 crossover fuel line,  before memory kicked in about pushing them out with the slide in. it looked new in the 1, so i figured why take it apart and spend weeks looking for those little ball sockets that loose. put the crossover tube back in with the old orings- no leaks on them. not going to look at the slide needles, not going to remove the air idle screws, they were stuck but got them free with little effort. they have the limiter caps on so they gotta be close to specs. takin them off might break them.

the problem with now testing, is a few weeks ago, the running carb finally was fixed of leaks and timing was nailed i'd hate to take it apart and loose the situation.

called ape maching shop the other day, now they said anything smaller than 55mm is sent out or something, i couldn't make it out what he said, so i'll put a pile of parts to take out there, but at 1st over or .025 over, that's less than 55mm isn't it? and those choke adjusters for 2,3,and 4 carbs, are they adjusted for closed or open? thought they were to leave those to close under spring tension and not solid from the lever, while being fairly flat at open.

I adjust the choke plates to be as close to flat as possible with choke off. That minimizes airflow obstruction ... maybe not very important?
The plates don't all close tight this way, but come close. Choke effectiveness is not affected in my experience, cold starts are no more of a problem than with them all fully closed.
