Gas tank removal - CB400
« on: October 28, 2020, 07:31:44 AM »
Hello again.  May seem like a silly question, but to remove the tank on my 75 CB400, is it supposed to be a bear to pull the rubber strap back over the tank tab to release the back of the tank?  I can not get it pulled far enough to get over and off the tab.

Maybe it has lost its elasticity after 45 years and I'll have to cut it and get a new one.  Just seems like it shouldn't be this much of a fight.  Is there a trick to it or something?

Thanks for your time and help.

I usually have to use a pair of pliers to flip mine over the tab. And every time, a bit of the rubber holder comes off  :(

In all fairness, you can get away with slicing it on top. The seat should do a good job of holding the back of the tank in place.

Thank you both.  I tried pliers and it started splitting, so I stopped thinking I was forcing it and needed to do something different.  Time to get out the chainsaw and have my way with it. :o

My tank just rests on the rubber and is held in place by the front of the seat. When I open the seat I can take the tank off :D

You can also trim down the tab on the tank with a grinder so it's not as long.

I have replaced mine ('76) once - maybe 20 years ago? - and it's starting to get a bit cranky again when I try to pull the tank. An original must be quite hardened by now. Yes you can just cut off the top bit of the rubber (the bit that pulls back) and the tank is still held down pretty well by the seat, with the bottom part locating it in place until the rear is lifted up.

But I want the tank as secure as it was designed to be. Having it go for a tumble if a crash pops the seat open ... not ideal.

The part - 17613-377-000 - is available from CMSNL and DSS. And on fleabay now and then. CMSNL also has a kit that adds the tank front hanger rubbers.

Just thread a wide cable tie through the rubber loop, do it up leaving a loop and you then use it to pull the rubber pad loop backwards and sideways and it will slip over the tank tab. I left mine in place after I put it there years ago and and it does the job a treat. Also saves a few broken finger nails 😁😁😁😁
