Storage unit ugh. now thinking eh.
« on: September 14, 2021, 03:24:46 PM »
I need some room for my winter car project and rented a storage unit to stash a car and a couple of my least likely to work on bikes. After seeing it, I'm not so sure, it is on the back end of a single row building which makes two exposed metal walls that a kid with a sharp screwdriver and can opener can open.

Any time I am away from my treasure I worry about it too.
A cold winter could change the mind of a kid with a screwdriver thinking it could be a good idea to enter that way.
On the other hand if you were surrounded by other units and a renter decided to unfasten his wall and see what you have ,that is the same threat times three.
If one of the surrounding 3 units were to catch fire, well that 's only twice the threat really, and who wants to set their stuff on fire? Well maybe if it was over insured  or a crazed ex thinks it would be a good thing to light it up...how likely is that right? You'd have a better chance of an explosion if the neighboring storage units were used to cook crack....that only happens more  than we think it does...so what are the odds?
And here's the longshot. Since most security cameras focus on ground level activity, a smart thief  who knows what you have because you didn't bring it in quietly, might bring in two box trucks and park them with the overhead doors facing each other close to the building so the cameras can't see them climbing between them up to the roof where they unscrew the metal roof panels apart and remove the contents of the unit through the roof and into the 2 trucks.  Don't worry, Only heard of it once or twice. Okay maybe three times at the most.
Short of putting in your own security system in that would notify both you and the police in the event of a break in , just how is anyone supposed to get a good nights rest when your treasure isn't in your line of sight and out of range?
If I had an issue like this and had 40 extra feet of yard, I would be thinking an overseas container or a pod for temporary use if it would relieve the worry of it all. My neck of the woods are covered with those things and everyone knows to stay clear of another man's container.

You summed it up pretty well. I'm thinking a cell phone connected trail cam inside. A yard barn would be legal here, that's the bike sized answer.

I'll check around. My son in law said I could use his Quonset hut shed but it's near a cornfield and lots of mice.

Yeah, mice can't carry much...DCON makes sure they only visit once.

Fact. I spread the bait stations around outside. I learned it from a food warehouse I worked at once. They had a perimeter in rings around the outside.
I also learned a squirrel will open a plastic dcon box and shortly after, drop out of his tree. Then some other critter took off with his head.

Maybe park one of these inside, pointed toward the door?

I tried to save a seat pan once that was under a totally mouse eaten foam. I think I caught Bubonic Plague. Going to a car show tomorrow then the car goes in. My youngest is looking for a cell phone trail cam to set up in the shed.

One of our race cars spends every winter in my barn. Good cover, pulled down tight. Years ago, someone suggested this: A new box of “Bounce” dryer sheets gets spread around the engine compartment and interior. Seems to keep the mice out very effectively. It’s up on Jack stands and I lay out 3-4 bait traps too.

The Bounce is a good idea, the building looks tight but I know how evil mice are. I went by to put tarps under the car around dusk and the lighting came on, it's pretty well lit. I have a bait station too but left it in the trunk when I took the battery out. It wasn't starting well, I think the battery terminals were loose.

This works well in my [old] motorhome, too. When I got it, mice had been 'renting' it, caused a total rebuild of the interior. Since then it gets fresh mulberry candles (open, not burning) and Bounce sheets regularly. No more troubles!

I use tarps under it to protect the car from moisture coming out of the concrete and the concrete from the drippy (oil) fuel pump.  I was tickled that the bad gas showed no signs of rust when I drained it. I'll add some stabilizer and start it up on next trip there.
A cloth cover and a window cracked a bit to let it breathe. A friend keeps his show car in a trailer in a barn with great results. He thinks the air gap under the trailer keeps it dry.
