1974 CB750 sputtering when given a flick of the throttle
« on: November 10, 2020, 01:38:15 PM »
Hi all. I had an issue yesterday with my 74 CB750 sputtering/jerking while out on a long ride. The guy I was riding with just swapped plugs 2 and 3 and tightened up the caps on the wire and it ran fine enough to get me home.

I reversed the plugs back to original positions and attempted to go out on a ride this morning. I didn't manage to get very far before it started sputtering/jerking again. I pulled over and checked to see if the caps were loose on the wires but they were fine. I turned back to go home and had to pull over again. This second time pulling over the electric ignition wouldn't start. It wouldn't even try to turn over. However, the bike did kick start up right away.

I managed to get it home and pulled the plugs, swapped in new ones, cut off .25" of the spark plug wires and reset the caps back on in case it was the connection causing the problem. I also made sure all of the spark wires were connected to the Dyna Coil and one felt loose so I pulled it off and set it back on. Also checked the battery and voltage is fine.

The bike starts up great with no problems but when I took it out around my neighbourhood streets it was fine, a small jerk here and there. But I got onto a major road and as soon as I gave it a twist of the throttle in second it started the sputtering/jerking. I'm not sure what else to do here and I'm pretty green with this stuff. Bike has been running fantastic all riding season up until now.

Any suggestions on what else I could look at? It's storage time soon and I'd rather try and sort this out for storage than deal with it come Spring.

TIA

I like to check the exhaust pipes with a wet rag when there are problems like this and do the 'sizzle' test. Its nice to know if its just one cylinder misbehaving or a pair. If its a pair then your Dyna electronic ignition may be on the way out, been problems reported on certain ones. You mentioned your electric start did not work. Is the battery old and dying or maybe your charging system is not up to snuff. These bikes like a healthy battery.
Other then electrical problems there could be a dirty carb or fuel flow issue. Try to see which or how many cylinders are not firing correctly.

It sounds like the battery is giving up, measure the voltage, charge it and measure again.
