1974 CB550 Air cleaner assembly
« on: November 24, 2020, 11:17:17 AM »
Hi all. Brand new to this forum and really looking for some help. I have just purchased a 1974 CB550 from the US to restore. The complete air cleaner assembly is missing from under the seat. If I open the seat I can see right through to the ground! Having done some research I can see there is an air cleaner assembly missing. However when searching for my 1974 USA Four model I am getting various assembly drawings or results for later bikes.

I would really appreciate anyone who can help with confirming what should be under the seat and advise good places to look for the parts as many seem very difficult to find (especially the case for the filter itself).

Thanks in advance for any help as I am very confused.

Pete

I've been buying OEM parts from Rocky Mountain ATV - if Honda still makes the part, they can get it: https://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/oem-parts/Honda

You'll find the part schematics for the '74 550 under Motorcycle > Models with no year (at the bottom) > CB550A MOTORCYCLE, JPN, VIN# CB550K-1000001

Many of the air cleaner parts are no longer made, and you will likely have more luck finding something on eBay. It looks like the schematics for this assembly are the same for the 74-76 models.

Smiler, I advise you to consult the CB550, CB550K1, CB550K2 parts list. It's the first one here: http://www.honda4fun.com/materiale-documentazione-tecnica/parts-list/parts-list-cb550 The components of the aircleaner are in detail shown in part 6  http://www.honda4fun.com/pdf_parts_list/pdf_spac550/CB550-K0-K1-K2/CB550-K0-K1-K2_06.pdf

Same parts from 1971 500 to 1976 550K, only difference is tool tray on top and the recic breather which you can bypass if you get the 500
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Yeah, that ^ would be my choice. Simply plug the breather intake on the airfiltercase and have the tube rerouted as shown on p. 170 (Fig. K2-1) of the Honda Shop Manual CB500 - CB550.  https://www.classiccycles.org/media//DIR_1653304/DIR_1653404/DIR_1653507/ecc6759db0a214d5ffff8825ffffe41e.pdf  BTW, this will not affect performance in anyway.

Thanks very much to everyone who has been kind enough to reply. Loads of great information which has helped to clear the confusion. I will now start tracking the parts down.

But... that's the plenum... I thought we were talking about the airfilter case.
