Wheels

Hi, Have a CB750K2. The front and rear rims are DID. Are these original. They have quite a bit of rust on the inside. Is it better to try to save original or just buy new?

Depending on the depth of rust penetration they could still be useable. Products like Evaporust will remove the rust without affecting any of the plating like acids will. Once rust is removed you'll have to protect the newly clean steel from rusting again, perhaps a self etching primer will be suggested.

It will be much cheaper to attempt to save your existing wheels than to replace them. Spoke kits are plentiful, both zinc plated and stainless steel.

DID rims are standard. Rust on the inside is pretty normal - I like to use a wire wheel to clean off all the loose flakes and rust scales before coating with some kind of rust preventative like fishoil. paint, grease, etc... Whether it is better to rechrome originals or buy new rims depends on whether you care that the new DID rims available have differences in the stamped markings when compared to original rims. Rechroming will likely cost more than new rims!

How is the chrome?  If good, then just wire wheel the rust on the inside and paint.
And install new rim strips of course.

fyi...if there is any wording stamped on the side of the rim, then they are not original. It means something to some people, just depends.

Thanks everyone for your input. I will do some cleaning and a quote to chrome. Yamiya has DID rim set for 156.00.

The old stock rims have a special smooth look with DID logo near the valve stem hole.

The replacement rims look different with DID with sizes printed on the side. It has not that softer curved design as stock had.

I replaced my rims on my K6 1979-80. The rims I got were the later style DID rims, still sold today.
