Hello from Alabama
« on: November 15, 2020, 10:37:53 AM »
Thanks for allowing me into the forum. Recently bought a '73 Honda CB750, not running and eng won't turn. This'll be my 2nd restore attempt. 1st was '72 Honda CL70, finally got it running this year after having it for 5 yrs. My son (14) just got his motorcycle license and is enjoying riding around the neighborhood, picture in members gallery after its approved. We worked on it together and we're going to do the same for the 750. Have removed everything except eng, that's next. Looking forward to researching the how to's of an engine tear down and rebuild here.

Howdy & good luck!

I recently got my first 750 running. Much easier situation than yours. Mine just needed a carb clean & tank de-rusting. You'll definitely enjoy it when you get it done. Funnest bike I've ever owned.

Cheers

Welcome for NE MN,

Pull the plugs and soak the rings with oil.  After a few days try rocking the bike in third gear.  This trick has help many a bike to free up.

The suggestion from MD is a good one. I've used it successfully.

But it is very important to cover the spark plug holes and/or do the rocking outside. When the engine breaks loose, that oil will shoot out & get everywhere if you're not prepared.

Thanks for the suggestions. I wasn't aware you could "rock it" as a way to unlock the engine. We're going to continue with the engine removal and tear down (since all we have left is take the engine out of the frame). I saw the plans for an engine stand mod here in one of the areas, so I'm going to copy that idea so we have a place (off the floor) to work on the engine. Not sure if we're gonna turn it into a Cafe Racer bike or restore back to original.

Welcome aboard Mark and to your son too!
I started in on a 74 750 last February that he got from his father in law. We've worked on it off and have the motor out to replace the seals and pucks. I repainted the frame and the other black parts over the summer and polished the aluminum covers, painted the motor.
It sat in a rat infested shed for 33 years so it was a sad site to behold while holding our breath digging it out...yes we wore dust masks as we cleaned out the shed to get it out to the sunlight. Thankfully it was not locked up and only 5 wires chewed that I soldered in and heat shrink'd the splice repairs.
After you get the minimum posts you'll be able to post pictures of yours for all to see it. Have a blast with your son on it.
