LAX airport parking structure CB550 abandoned?
« on: November 29, 2020, 09:26:15 AM »
Dusty, expired 2019 tag, weathered note on seat offering to buy it. Barn find!

It would be interesting to know the story on this one.

Looks like someone had to get out of the country quick.  I would go with the legally fool-proof saying of "Finders Keepers".

Looks pretty nice. Are you thinking it has just been sitting there for a year or more ? Seems like it would get towed out or something worse like stolen. Wonder what the parking bill is gonna be  :)

I recently restored and sold a 77 cb750f, and am nearly finished with a (former basket case) cb750k5.  This is a place to share, learn and enjoy.  I am grateful to and for 99+% of this site's membership.

I know the guy who owns this bike. He went on a trip and was hit by a car, and has been in the hospital for several months, unable to come back and get it. But he knows nobody would do something like rent a van and steal it or strip it because it's parked in a secure spot. He'll just have a big bill to settle when he's out.

But seriously you guys, hate to p1ss on your parade, but you guys are basically talking about renting a van and stealing a bike just because it's dusty and has been sitting there for a while. Chill. Leave a note. Do it the right way.

I always thought that anything motorycle related acquired by malfeasance would come back to bite whoever took it in the @ss -- an accident or something sh1tty happening. There are plenty of legit good deals out there.

Hi Folks..

Well being that I travel to Japan quite regularly..before Corona hit anyway LOL..was thinking that this may be a bike of someone who's been 'quarantined in another Country'..unable to return to get it ??  I've left vehicles in Airport parking lots for months myself..before returning BTW.

Very easy to ask the airport folks about that vehicle..as they probably have some record of the person who left it there.

Just suggesting that with all things considered regarding current social situations..restrictions..etc. that it's probably best to figure that in to this situation with a 'suspected abandoned bike'.

Were all in this together..right?

I just found it odd, I don't want to grab it or see it grabbed.  It could be someone stuck out of the country or other plausible reason, as Ichi said.

Too bad someone can't store it for him, but the bill may now be higher than bike is worth.  Or he would like to pay.
He may be better off letting someone else buy it off the storageholder. They will try for full price out of the owner.
But in reality , they will usually settle for less , or take the vehicle .

A guy I know has a bodyshop, he has had several vehicles left there. . They are allowed to charge storage prices that are quite high !  The  bank walked away from a 4 or 4 1/2  year old truck that was keft there.. it got dropped off in front of part of the shop.... sat there for a month before they looked into it. Turns out the guy that had the truck died, looks like someone drove it for around a month, then left it there. ..

OUCH- According to this long term parking could be around $40.00 per day - $280.00 a week - $1200.00 a month. That might be getting to be quite an expensive 550. Hopefully a waiver for difficult circumstances.  https://airportparkingreservations.com/lax/parking/long-term-parking?gclid=Cj0KCQiAzZL-BRDnARIsAPCJs73iFHkgnWWJ0L7xMuMjo3hPNy7ZKibHcuDK7Fcxc_EpwpqYW4K4HH0aAr3mEALw_wcB

This entire concept has made my mind wander and I'm sorry if I went off the blacktop in anyone's opinion. In my local area we have a great group of members.  Some are closer friends but I've always felt a degree of Brotherhood was present. Over the years there have been ups and down as lives progress at different paces, and sometimes the unexpected has happened.

I could imagine a "rescue and store" mission, undertaken by our group. I'd think members in most areas would feel the same.

Last time I landed on LAX was summer 2018 to visit an old friend in Santa Barbara to do some travelling. Months before I had had fantasies about having luck and run into a CB550 I could buy. It would have been my favourite, simply because it's the model I've become familiar with. I might even had it shipped to Holland afterwards. We did most of our travelling by car and hiked in parks. One day I rented a Suzuki SV650. Bike was fine, but the clubmans or whatever they were, tiring and towards the end of the day very, very painful. Once more I learned how important a good riding position is. My wrists still ache when I think of it. The idea that that CB550 has maybe been waiting...  :)

Sorry I missed this first time but it is what I hoped for when I originally posted.  I have a trailer and room to park the bike, so if you communicate with the owner and he needs help, let me know.  I live about an hour from LAX.  PM me.

Sorry for the misunderstanding -- I don't know the guy, but I was trying to make a point. It's somebody's bike. Maybe even someone here, or a friend of someone here.

As Ichiban pointed out, might even be someone caught up in a C19 lockdown.

Bikes get abandoned a lot.. it could even be stolen..
Our experience has been that they generally owe money and don't expect the bike back...is what happens regularity at rental properties.  The way bit works here is you send a registered letter to the person it is registered to, last known address. Then when it returns unopened .. they issue you new reggie.. people that leave vehicles behind..almost never respond to registered letters.
So how long has bike been there,  a 2019 tag does it mean it was ridden that year.?
Or has someone just left it there as a prank.?
If it has been a year , storage will exceed its value..
It may be best to try to purchase it off whoever controls the lot and is responsible   .. even if just for parts.

Run the numbers , maybe it is stolen..
