Complete engine worth
« on: December 06, 2020, 07:09:58 PM »
Moving along with the freshening up of my CB400.  About ready to begin reassembling the rear end.

I have a complete spare engine - all covers, full set of carbs, starter, the whole shooting match - that I am thinking of selling.

What's the value of a complete engine?  It does need some TLC and polishing, but everything is there.  I really don't have a use for it, and hate to see it sit for another 25 years.

Thanks for your time and input.

That all depends on a lot of things. The biggest factor being how close it is to someone who needs it.
Are you able to do a compression test on the cylinders?
The carbs add a lot to the value, if they are clean and usable.

It is probably worth more in parts than as a whole...but that takes time, and time =$.

Where are you located?

I'm located in NC.

Not able to do a comp test on the cylinders.  One of the tools I don't have.

Yeah, to ship this thing would be crazy expensive.  It was a bit of a chore getting it loaded into and out of the truck!

I appreciate the feedback.

It is the least heavy of all the fours, along ofcourse with the 350, I measured one on request some time ago, it is manageable on your own with 60 kilos.

$200-300...if you can find a local buyer.  Shipping a motor is typically a deal killer.

Just keep it, that way you wont need it!

I've sold a few engines including 400Fs, and that's about right, maybe a little high with unknown compression and not coming from a running bike.

Shipping through u-ship or Greyhound for engines is the cheapest.

Would engine number figure into the value?
Someone will want that engine I'm sure.

Not as far as I know. There aren't the same variations/changes over time as there were with the 750, nor desireability of the earliest engines. I think the last year of production there was a change to the engine studs to stop weeping oil, but that's it as far as I know. Some foreign (outside USA) 400Fs had a shorter stroke. And someone might want an engine that more closely matches their frame #.

Buying an unknown engine is kind of risky if your hoping for a plug and play. I just bought a 750 F1 today without a title that I may be parting out this winter though not sure yet. My plan is to see if I can get the engine running first then make a video or try and sell it running in the frame for a person to see. If it sounds too good it will probably go into my stash with all the others I'll never use  ::)

What you effectively have is a spare parts engine unless someone can see it running
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)
