Which wire goes where on new CB550 coils?
« on: December 07, 2020, 11:54:05 AM »
Hello everyone,

Hope you have all been healthy and staying entertained!

Just a quick question for you before I go back to lurking in the shadows:

Had to replace the old coils on my '76 CB550 which each had the two plug wires and then two colored/stripe 16 gauge wires with bullet connectors (permanently potted within the coil so that they are not removable).

The new replacement coils also have the two plug wires but instead of permanently potted 16 gauge wires like the old ones they are connected to the coils via spade connectors and are unmarked.  My issue is that I am not sure which wire goes to which spade connector on the coil.  It is obvious where these 16 gauge wires connect back into the harness but the big thing is just which which spade connector is correct for each wire.

My gut is saying that since they are not marked +/- or anything like that it ultimately does not matter which wire goes where (such as both spade connectors on the coil are grounded) but after unsuccessful searches I figured I would just ask before frying my new coils!

As always, thank you to everyone.  I really enjoy reading through these forums on the regular and wish I had more time and knowledge to contribute but hopefully someone in the future will have the same question as me and will find this thread one day.

I have also attempted to attach a photo of the coils for reference:

Thank you for the response calj737!

Just to clarify: both of the connectors on the coil have the same polarity so it does not matter which wire goes to which bullet connector from the coil to the harness, right?

I have the original factory colored wires for the coils so those green and black wires in the photo were just a "universal" set that they sent with the coils.

Thanks again and hopefully I am understanding you correctly!

All things being equal the black/white should go to +ve and then the blue or yellow to =ve but this is only important when the HT only has one output with the steel mounting being the other HT contact on the twin HT coils on the fours the mountings are insulated from the windings so LT polarity does not matter

Thank you for confirming that it does not matter which wire goes where!
