bike rolls then locks up -76 CB550
« on: December 09, 2020, 10:47:27 AM »
haven't ridden the bike in awhile.  last thing i did was adjust valves, timing and cam chain.  also had stator and rotor off, cleaned up and reinstalled.  today moving around in the garage in neutral it rolled about 6 feet and locked up.  thought it was the rear brake but it is not.  put bike on center stand and rolled rear wheel with same result.  did the same in gear.  thoughts?

my first thought woud be that something went wrong while you worked on it... did you already check if everything was done correctly, and that you didn't accidentally disturb something while working?

Have a look at the chain, maybe there is something caught in it that stops it going onto a sprocket

I can't say that I know much about 550s but failing all of the above you may want to double check your valve adjustments, hopefully a valve is not contacting a piston.

Bingo Tim. A random bolt must have fallen off of the workbench and was laying perfectly on the chain. Problem solved. Should’ve already looked there but I was worried about gear issues.

Better buy a lottery ticket as that issue you had with a bolt falling and or laying on your chain somehow and wedging the bike has to be very rare indeed.
